if there going to Lithuania i don?t think you need to worry about FAST. Just get some old win95 licences ( ihave 100's at work) and change the licence key on the laptop.(easy to do). One thing i should mention is that there are some strange laws about bringing/taking computer equipment to places like Lithuanina(i.e. non-EEC/EU countries) that you hadf better get chewcked out before you are up for spying!!

It may be more beneficial to raise money by selling all but 2/3 of the laptops  - if everyone is happy with that idea.

Is EBay the best place for this?  Any ideas folks?

If you need them stored anywhere McSheep we could squeeze them in at oor hoose.

My suggestion is that one goes to a home or organisation in Vilnius, Kaunas and Zagare.

McSheep you can let me know if you want to hand one over yourself in wherever your going to be based.

I`ve got a contact name in Lithuania from Sally Chambers (Lithuania Holidays) who I can ask about the legalities of taking them over there.  Also Mirza has a Lithuanian mate who might be able to advise on this.

Laptops were from Royal Scottish.

I think mcteagle has already offered to buy one, and if anyone else wanted to then you could take the last few over there.  One to each of the areas sounds a good to me.

Might be better to sell them off from here on first come basis with it being ex-company machines.  There are 10 in total so 7 to sell?

Mazzy,  Not sure where you are based, so could try and arrange something depending on location of anyone that might want to buy one.

Let me know what you think.

McSheep I`m in Edinburgh and make occasional forays up to the Moray Firth so could deliver en route if needed.

Will know nearer the time how stuff is getting handed over so can sort out who takes the 3 to Lithuania.

Have you an idea of a price and we could put something in the General and AOB forums about them.

If you have a name of appropriate person in Royal Scottish or  give me your details I`ll sort out a Sunshine Appeal  thank you letter.

Are you happy to take names of people who want to buy them and getting them "delivered" can be sorted out after that?

I would guess about £50 would be a good deal for all parties concerned.
I'll dig out some details for a letter to get sent to.

I don't mind taking not of a few names and then we can sort out deliveries later.

Don't know how much you would realistically make from selling them here.   I thought the UK was awash with second hand IT nowadays.   Potential recipients in Lithuania might be well chuffed with something like this though.

As for export controls for shipping to Lithuania.   4 year-old laptops are probably OK but, to be certain, you have to get in touch with the DTI's Export Control Organisation.   You can do a thing called a "ratings enquiry" and they'll tell you whether or not the machines or software are restricted for that destination without going through the whole process of applying for an export licence.   You can find the contact details on the DTI website at http://www.dti.gov.uk/export.control/

Of course, if they are controlled then you'll need a licence before you can take them out there and you'll need to know who the end-users will be when you apply.

I think we might have to minimise the potential  problems we might get taking stuff over - the less likelihood of hassle at customs the better.

It just needs one "difficult" customs type dude at the airport and we could be f***ed.

If we can get two or three laptops to the homes we`ve identified without too many complications I think we will be doing well!!

As far as Customs goes, if you can get one through you can get them all through.   They're either controlled or they're not.   If you're worried all you need is the piece of paper from the DTI to show at Customs and you're sorted.

Even if the laptops  don`t sell for huge amounts of money over here, most charities in Lithuania would probably admit to needing practical  things like nappies, bedding, cleaning materials etc more than laptops.

However maybe they would raise more money being sold over there?

Is anyone willing to check out the DTI and get the "ratings enquiry" done in conjunction with information from McSheep?  I`m not very hot on the tekky stuff.

If we need licences it probably will be simpler just to take three to the organisations we have identified.

There`s going to be quite a lot of stuff to get taken over and we will be relying on volunteers to take it and get it to its destination.

Hi mcsheep,

Put me down for one also. I assume agreed price is £50 as mentioned in earlier post.
If/when agreed , let me know when you need my details .

Talks too much

If the duty was paid on import of these Lap tops then they would not be under UK Customs control.

All that would be required to export them is a Pro Forma commercial shipment invoice.

I am going to dig further into this via my freight agents and will provide an update accordingly.

I'm sure you're right mcsheep. I just thought that was initial figure mentioned hence that figure appearedin my post.
I'll check out new thread and see what I can afford.
