Something to say

looks like we have another one: Scots boy has come joint first with a Cypriot bloke in the Rings (one of the gymnastic competitions).

Cricket is a fine sport and one in which England are improving .

Wee Dave,
I think the forum moderatros might have a word or two to say about your post. Children read this board and should not be exposed to some vile piece of filth about a Scots boy coming first in some Cypriot bloke's ring.

BBC complaints (a subject close to my heart)

Phone: 08700 100 222

Fax:     0141 338 2200 (Mark Leishman,head of corporate affairs)

Post:John McCormick,BBC Controller,Queen Margaret Dve.,Glasgow G12 8DG (fax 0141 338 2200)

     But best to try  Greig Dyke,BBC Director General,Portland Place,London W1A 1AA

Can I also just say that I'm DELIGHTED that England play Land of Hope and Glory in the commonwealth games. It's inoffensive, cheerful, exclusively English, and dare I say, catchy.I wish they would play this for English football and rugby internationals.I might even get off my arse and pay my respect, for once.
I resent GSTQ being played as both the English and UK anthem. In fact I resent it full stop.England should drop it.

Jerusalem ,on the other hand,is equally pathetic, and tries to imply that Jesus was English! Tsk tsk
Any comments,CUFC/Kernie?

Yes!!

Land of Hope and Glory is fun , but is at heart an imperialist anthem, so . Jerusalem is a working-class hymn with a much better tune, so to it. Best of the bunch however is I Vow to Thee My Country :tearinmyeye:.

Ain't complaining though - this is the first time I have ever heard an exclusively English anthem played at a sporting event. It's been a long wait and it feels good

I think England would drop GStQ if it could - I don't know anyone who likes it and most people I know hate it - but... how do we do it? No one seems to know. The invisible british establishment will I fear fight tooth and nail to keep it, cos they know that once England starts waking up as a nation their little empire is finished. BTW, Will Carling of all people was campaigning for it to be dropped as far back as the 1980s. Strange but true.

Can I just say congratulations to all Scotland's AND England's medal winners thus far?? These are hard-working individual athletes, not megabucks football poseurs, surely no one can begrudge them their success? And the spirit of the competition has been brilliant, IMn-sHO.

Agree, GSTQ is horrendous and isn't even fun to sing.

As Kernie says, Land of Hope & Glory is a bit imperialistic; "Wider still and wider...." but a much better tune and you can really belt it out.

Jerusalem - like the tune, not that much of a fan of the words/sentiment and not sure whether many of the ethnic minorities in England would relate to it.

So..... dunno. I'd love us to get rid of GSTQ but it will be very hard, particularly with all the middle England, Daily Mail-reading housewives who would be outraged at the very suggestion without really knowing why........

Far too much common-sense and agreement in this topic.

Got to say, despite some of the comments on the EBC, I'm thoroughly enjoying the games.

Aye, they've been quite good. Strangely I don't even seem to mind the English winning medals - although obviously I prefer it when we do.

Jerusalem????? I never knew Jerusalem was in england!!!!

Gotta say I do think LOHAG is a good tune and is much less of a moronic arse licking of the monarch. Christ, I would be really embarressed by tens of thousands of people singing about god should save me and how gracious and noble i was! what a pile of pish!

I'm all for Jerusalem me. It's a great socialist anthem which is much misunderstood. In the first verse, Blake wonders as to whether Jesus visited England as legend would have it. The second verse then moves to Blake's time, the Industrial Revolution, dark satanic mills and all that and asks, is this worthy of God? Deciding that the answer is "no", the third verse then calls for change and revolution to build a country fit for God's children.

This of course flies right over the heads of the union flag waving yahoos at Last Night of the Proms.

Incidentally, does anyone want to hear my theory about national anthems? Every country that has Mrs Windsor as head of state - Scotland, England, Australia, New Zealand, etc. - should be forced to play GSTQ as their anthem before football and rugby matches. We'd have independent republics world-wide within 6 months.

I hate to say it CUFC but who gives a flying one whether the ethnic minorities would relate to it? This is England's national anthem we're talking about, not Afghanistan's or Somalia's. Do you object to FoS because of what the English in scotland might think of it? :let'snotfalloutoverthisthough:

Right, that's it Kernie :grabsplasticchair:

I do agree with you to a certain extent - but feel that the national anthem should reflect part of what it feels like to be English and shouldn't exclude anyone who doesn't necessarily conform to the traditional definition of 'Englishness'.

Perhaps 'ethnic minorities' wasn't the right term - I certainly didn't mean we should tiptoe around trying not to offend asylum seekers et al - but what about English people of different religious denominations? Is an English Muslim going to feel comfortable with or able to relate to 'Jerusalem' or will it just seem like outdated Christian rhetoric?
