I don't have a problem with ethnic minorities celebrating their identity, I just don't like them then demanding that Englishness (or Scottishness, Germanness, whateverness) always make concessions to it and incorporate it. That way lies the slow erosion of an ethnic idenitity (i.e. ours). You can have your cake or ear it but you can't do both.
Live and let live I say, but let's be honest about things.
Anyway! I Vow to Thee My Country gets my vote.

YES!! And that Badminton playing slotbadger who joined him in the E*****d squad because they provided more cash and facilities.
As someone on here said at the time, these people are not playing for any country, they are in it for themselves and no-one else.
I saw the cycling boy get his gold medal with a tear in his eye the other night. That's what it should be all about - whatever country the athletes are from.
Of course he could just have been crying because Scotland The Brave sounded so pish. I don't know.

Kernaghan - The chances of getting I Vow To Thee My Country adopted as the English national anthem are approximately nil - it is neither well known nor particularly rousing. The only thing that's certain is that God Save The Queen simply has to go - a bit like the old bint herself - it really is the most terrible dirge, I'm ashamed every time I hear it. We're the only country in the world whose anthem is dedicated to one individual. I've been pleased to see the (unannounced) adoption of Land of Hope and Glory, which, while not perfect, is an excellent replacement. Rather like the Star Spangled Banner - another English tune - it's jaunty and upbeat and a good piece of music in its own right. We can probably get away with the slightly dodgy "wider still and wider" sentiment by claiming that it's about greater inclusivity in today's England.
GSTQ is only the English anthem by default (rather like the union flag was considered the English flag by a great number of football supporteres who didn't know better), eventually it will have to be replaced and it's better that it's replaced by LoHaG rather than some newly composed Blairite anthem that's been focus-grouped to death.

I know I Vow to Thee My Country has very little chance of becoming our national anthem... it's just a personal favourite  . 'Not particularly rousing'???? You slap on Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity my son and fast forward to 3:15 and tell me that doesn't rouse you. :honestly:
