One and Only! |
I have to say I am starting to get very fed up with the stupidity of the SFAs organisation of the national side and its resources.
Firstly, the qualifying fixtures for Portugal 2004 couldn't be any worse for the fans. The fact that 2 pairs of our away games could have been within reasonable traveling distance from eachother would make you think that when the teams were drawn out, we could have tried our damnedest to get them together (like San Marino/ Croatia)... but no... Iceland and the Faroe Islands as seperate trips and a home game followed by a mid week away game!! (Iceland @ h then Lithuania away)...(some of us have to work too!!!and have families etc etc... do they want as few fans as possible there or what!?! could they have been positioned any more costly or inconveniently?) AND THEN... to add to our travels we have a friendly the tuesday after the Iceland game... in Edinburgh! As far as I can see, everybody has already arranged their travels etc for Iceland and will have dispersed in their directions for home... This is maybe a minor whine but it certainly makes sure that alot of the regular guys (and ma pals) cannae go... maybe this is maybe why they are playing it at Easter Rd.... cos they knew they couldn't fill Hampden?
I find it very surprising and disappointing that after all the hoo haargh about the overspending regarding Hampden and the money lost, the SFA insist on arranging midweek games straight after a long arranged and important away game which many folk will not be able to attend. Surely it would have been more sensible even to hold the game back to another date... even if it was delayed 1 week so that more marketing could be done and more of an effort made into encouraging more people to come along?!
Am I being narrow minded and blinkered? or am I just in a bad mood!?
It sometimes seems to me that the SFA just "let" things happen... they mystify me...
Rant oer.
Oh aye, I'm no complaining about us playing loads a games... it's just the thought going into them... you'd think the SFA would put more thought into makin as much money ootae it as possible!!!

Aye, yer whinging.
There were four other countries fighting over who played where and when. At least we've got all the important games (ie. at home!) on a Saturday. Worrying about the travel plans of a couple of thousand fans is not part of Berti's responsibilities - fox ache, he's got a hard enough job already! Gie him peace!

Aye but why did we no use the summer slots fir Faroes or Iceland next June. That would have ensured a huge turnout. Faroes and Icers ken fine we're the top supported team - they wid ae been up fir it.
And whit wis Bertie haverin aboot when he said Germany have first choice cox they're tap seeds.
A ken whit he wis haverin..............pash

Am I one of the few that is quiet happy to see us play Canada at Easter Road in October. I can't manage the Faraway Islands or that Food Chain select, so I will be able to stand up give the boys a hearty cheer to thank them for the excellent results on their travels.

I guess Faroes/Iceland away was the best compromise Berti could get for opening fixtures that may get us off to a good start... At the end of the day that may be more valuable than playing these games next summer - regardless of how much nicer our holiday might have been.
Not sure about the top seed thing, but England tried to go against the wishes of top seeds in their group - forcing EUFA to sort it out. In Turkeys favour! Top seed certainly seemed to get the nod there.
Are you guys really expecting the SFA to ignore things like tactical advantage in arranging the fixtures, expressly to make our holidays more convenient???

I think the grieviences are valid but at the end of the day Berti is employed to get results and see us qualify.
Aye it's a b*tch but if we are all off to Portugal in 2 years time who gives a monkeys?
Still a bit of advanced warning would have been nice.

Surely the big games would have been better as mid week games as we would all make sure we got to them anyway...
The saturday games would be far better off as the smaller ones as then, as I stated before the SFA could concentrate on marketing them better and getting the fans in... obviously more people will be available to go to a saturday game... common sense...

Something to say |
Berti always said his main priority in arranging the fixtures was to have the German games late on in the campaign and to get off to an easy (ish!!!) start, which he achieved. Obviously a Faroes/Iceland double header in the summer would appear better for us, but as Aly says our holiday plans are hardly a major consideration in deciding these things.
As for the Canada game, I seem to remember this being mentioned as a strong possibility by Berti back around the time of the Nigeria game, so its hardly been sprung upon as people seem to be suggesting.

Its not the game thats surprised fowk, its the bloody date!!!
Anyway, I agree, it is the results that are the important part but it would have been nice for the team to have the best support possible!

Totally agree with Ally and DougieR. I want the SFA to arrange the fixtures to suit the team first and formost.
And in the case of the friendly is it not the case that international dates are prescribed leaving little flexibility??

Aye,
It's not the SFA that choose the international dates it's UEFA. Secondly, moving the Faroes and Iceland games to the summer might encourage more folk to travel but that would only cause more problems in terms of ticketing. Demand exceeds supply as it is. You could play Iceland away on Christmas Day and there still wouldnae be enough tickets to go around. Their ground's pish.

Im sure the Fans were the last thing on Bertie and the SFA's mind when they arranged the fixtures, and quite rightly too. THey will have been trying to arrange the fixtures in a way that would maximise their chances of qualifying. As for the question "why did we no use the summer slots fir Faroes or Iceland next June" Im sure Germany would get first dibs on that seeing as they are first seeds.
Also for the gripe about "play the iceland game in the summer as it would get more fans"..... Its already been said that the icelanic FA could sell out the stadium twice over with no away fans there, and the away allocation is probably a 3rd of what the SFA could sell..... Why would ensuring even less people got to go to the game be any better?!?!?!?!
Re: the Canada game... The game will be arranged to give the team practice, on one of the rigidly set days set by FIFA for international marches to take place, Again this is for the teams benefit not for the fans so why should they take into account when the supporters holidays are! Every one knew their was an international date the following midweek (seeing as the Faroes play iceland that day) so you cant say the fans couldnt expect there to be a chance of a game organised, especially when Bertie has said that he wants to arrange as many games as possible!
All I can say is Bzzzz shut yer hole
