Oh and for future reference - Winters is neither A) young, B) good enough for Aberdeen, let alone Scotland. 7 sclaffed penalties, 3 tap ins and a couple of deflected free kicks a season do not an international class player make.
Here here Suave.
All I would add to your list is "and one bad attitude"
Don't get me started about Mr Winters. Who incidentally was bought as a promising youngster, much to the amusment of the DUFC fans i know.

Suave - sounds to me like you're a red, so how come you're talking about McGuire and McNaughton needing to see first team football to aid their development? I seem to recall seeing them in the vast majority of Dons starting line-ups for the past two seasons.....
AND DON'T FORGET DARREN YOUNG!!!!!

Sitting in a nice wee internet cafe watching the Mekong slip by. Nice way to spend the afternoon but couldn't help popping in on the TAMB for a moment.
Strange though but when I left Bonnie Scotland for a wee holiday I fondly recall the Dons finishing miles behind the demonic Glasgow duo and on about the same points as......... Livi! Strange then that our future lies with a team made up of exclusively Aberdoom based players.
The stars of the future. Think we saw most in HK. Stewart, McNaughton, Crainey, Ross, Williams, OConner plus Maloney, Fergueson and Hughes as future stars.
Might be more but there will be a lot who just don't live up to the hype. Seem to remember that Cooper (bobbly haired one), Simpson, Jess etc were going to be the core of teams gone by.
Darren Mackie - methinks not!!!! Actually, Is he the mental one or is that his evil twin ?????????
Sorry but I reckon we have a few and a few will have to do
See you all soon

TS, but if they leave and don't play (or in Hughes/Maloney/Ross's case stay and don't play) then that will be cause for concern. I've seen almost every game P McG and K McN have played - and it's been a joy to see them progress since their debuts in abysmal sides(0-6 v Celtic and 1-2 v Bohs!).
TT - Mackie is neither, he's the lightning fast 20 year old striker who can't finish yet. Nowhere near the Scotland squad yet. Darren Young the defensive midfielder and Dons captain is the better of the 2 brothers (Derek a mf/striker). I don't think Darren is even close, especially since Gavin Rae and Colin Cameron don't even get a look in.
Eoin Jess should have been the core of teams gone by, you're right about that though!

As a Dons fan, I've got to agree about Mackie. He's the quickest player in Scottish football bar none, but that's no use when you trip over the ball, or let it bounce of your shin, or can't control a fish supper, or don't understand the offside rule.
He's a loooooooong way of being the finished article, but who knows..if he could hit the net with a bit more regularity, he'd be a shoe-in for Scotland.

TT - you're right, Aberdeen did finish a long way behind the terrible two last season and on about the same points as Livvy, but the reason there are so many Dons youngsters being touted on here as part of the Scotland set up is that, unlike the gruesome twosome, our youngsters play every week in the first team. Also, unlike Livvy, the vast majority of our players are a) young and b) Scottish. I'm more than happy that the likes of Ross and Hughes at Ibrox, and Crainey and Maloney at Parkheid, are getting games and are making an impression in the Scotland set up - I just hope that, come the start of the new season, with new players arriving and a league to be won, all of them still get regular games in the first team.
Like many of my fellow reds, I can't believe that Berti has so far overlooked Phil McGuire's claims, and I obviously can't believe that Darren Young has not even been mentioned ( ) - but I'm not saying that all of them should immediately be getting starting places for Scotland. I'd love to see that, but I'll cheer anyone who play for Scotland.
Oh, and one other thing, I don't think Darren Mackie is ready yet either. He showed glimpses last season of the potential that he has, and his pace is obviously a major advantage, but he needs to improve his control and finishing before he could be considered. Hopefully in the season ahead, his potential will be realised further.

If someone is not the finished article when they are 20 then they will probably not make it. Robbie Keane is 21 and that puts things into perspective.

Pace is no use on its own, look at Burchill. Anyway, I can't see past Maloney, Fletcher, O'Conner and Lynch. Midfield Hughes, Ross (not settled in a position) and Stewart. Can't think of any defenders who would be stars?
BTW, I want them to be an emerging class team by next Summer. In 5 years they should be a young but well-established team who contend!

Rubbish Alan, how old was Hendry when he got his first cap? What about Dodds, he didn't really click until Alex Miller sold him to United - although this might have had something to do with Miller playing him in midfield (the mind boggles)!
Mackie is certainly ready for the SPL (his goals show it) but not for Scotland; he has an excellent chance of playing regularly for his country in the future - he just needs to translate that potential into an end product, and I think that will take quite some time judging by the loons profligacy in front of goal.

It seems there is fair bit of talent just waiting to burst through which is great and I'm very excited about it. The thing that worries me is while we wait on them we slip further down the rankings and end up like the Welsh, facing extremely hard qualifying groups.
Lets hope Bertie can get the mix of youth and experience right for August, September & October.

Or we end up being just like Northern Ireland,
our youth players can play in youth teams Aberdeen need to be competing with The Old Firm which is unrealistic Pittodre's small yes the players play week in week out
BUT against what sort of opposition DUNFIMLINE who lost to New Zealand (mighty Oceanania team!!)

Sonny - you can't think of any defenders? What about McNaughton and Crainey, both of whom have already played (and played well) for Scotland?
And Jimbers - could you please try using sentences, or at least some form of punctuation, in your comments? I haven't got a clue what your point is....
I don't think we do need instant results, incidentally. Yes, it would be great to qualify for Portugal, but if by missing out on Euro 2004 we get things sorted out through all the levels of international football, so that we not only qualify for the World Cup in Germany but have a realistic chance of getting beyond the group phase, then I, for one, would put up with that.

Missing out on Portugal (unless it was through the play-offs) would in all probability also mean that we dropped into the third seeds instead of the second. This would leave us in the position where we could have say France and Holland in our group for the WC qualifiers which would make it very difficult to qualify.
We must, at worst, make the play offs which means we need instant results.

TS,
The question is about "stars" and although I can think of very good defenders I don't know of any who is likely to make it to being a Scottish hero as opposed to a good quality regular stalwart sort of thing.
