Scotland's women recorded an astonishing 8-1 victory over Portugal in yesterday's European Championship qualifier in Nelas, shooting them to the top of their group.
The firepower of Scotland's captain, Julie Fleeting, was too much for the Portuguese. Fleeting scored five goals in the win, and her strike partner Linda Brown was almost as prolific, with the other three. Eight goals in two games for Fleeting and Brown has scored four in two games, the most spectacular a free-kick from Fleeting and a training ground finish from Brown. Portugal's sole reply came in the second half from Ines Silva.
The victory confirms that Scotland is now a force to be reckoned with in European football. Coach Vera Pauw said “ we are obviously delighted with such a convincing result, however the Portuguese did play well but Scotland took all the opportunities.”
Team: Gemma Fay, Julie Smith (Suzy Robertson), Stacey Cook, Amanda Burns, Michelle Barr, Megan Sneddon, Joanne Love, Mhairi Gilmour (Kirsty McBride), Suzanne Grant (Pauline Hamill) Julie Fleeting, Linda Brown.
