Scotland's women recorded an astonishing 8-1 victory over Portugal in yesterday's European Championship qualifier in Nelas, shooting them to the top of their group.
The firepower of Scotland's captain, Julie Fleeting, was too much for the Portuguese. Fleeting scored five goals in the win, and her strike partner Linda Brown was almost as prolific, with the other three. Portugal's sole reply came in the second half from Ines Silva.
The victory confirms that Scotland are now a force to be reckoned with in European football, and although pre-tournament expectations were geared towards consolidation, hopes will be rising that the team could even qualify for the finals in England in 2005.
