:deepbreath:

Right, i've got my flack-jacket on, and i'm ready for friendly-fire....

The majority of the Sunshine Appeal's unofficial steering group ie those who have been most actively involved over the last 6 months, are of the opinion that "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
(The SA does belong to all TAMBers but someone has to make a decision or the thing will grind to an ugly halt)

We're all aware of the many pros and cons of going registered, but the majority aren't particularily keen on the idea.

Therefor, for the moment the SA will continue as it is.

:duck:

I won't repeat all the arguments, as they've all been exhaustively posted elsewhere (and i'd like to go home tonight), but i'll make a few points:

- this situation can easily be reveiwed at any point.

- the majority seem more comfortable with the informality, which to be fair, hasn't done so badly so far.

- Transparency is an issue which will continue to be addressed, via regular financial updates on the board or on request.

- there are plenty people willing to do the work involved in going registered, so that wasn't an issue.

- Anyone who wants to get more involved and hence have more input to these types of decisions, just get in touch.

The important thing is that everyone remains behind the Appeal and remains friends.

To quote one footsoldier - "I like most others on the list believe that the informality of the sunshine appeal has been the key to the overwhelming success it has had in the short time it has been running. I personally don't do much for the appeal but will continue to support in any way possible regardless if it goes Charity status or not."

Cheers

C

no one knows the appeals in's and outs than you guys.

The sunshine appeal has done some fantastic stuff for kids all over the world & all that has to happen is that continues, regardless of charity status or not.

Keep the good work going folks

I wouldn't worry about ducking CMc....

Debate is an important step in reaching informed conclusions and the most important thing IMO is that everyone feels free to contribute to this process.

However I am sure everyone accepts that ultimately decisions have to be made by a few key people. I am also sure everyone will be happy to accept whatever decisions are made following debate and consideration of whatever issues there may be.

In the end of the day its what the money does that counts so roll on the next time....

As we know from other threads, there have been a number of good reasons put forward regarding registering as a charity.
Likewise there have been quite a few reasons that would suggest we are better not registering.
This is certainly not a polarised argument - it's a tough choice reviewing the pros and cons then trying to project the likely scenarios if we follow either path.

One good point that C Mc made was that there ARE people involved already who are either for registering or, if that is the route that is chosen, would be willing to continue to be actively involved in the SA.

Also, if you are all for registering, how about helping out? It would be very much appreciated and allow some, who have been dedicating more time than they can afford, to sit back and spend the time they need on their businesses/family/drinking!

So if there is a belief amoung the SA participents (i.e. YOU) that we should register then say so and let's get organised.
If you feel that the present system is working well at the moment then DO NOT stay part of silent majority (or minority) - we need to know.

The previous threads on this debate have been lively but with few participants.
The number that have contributed to the Sunshine Appeal must now run into thousands. So please, just take a couple of seconds to indicate your preference.

Reminder there is no right & wrong decision here. Both ways are for the good of others.
We just need to decide which is the better way to go.

Thanx!

not sure if it is appropriate for people to comment on which way they think it should go, the decision has been made.

Also, while i have put a few quid in a bucket and bought a shoddy scarf now & again, I dont really spend any time doing anything for the sunshine appeal in terms of time, so while i'm sure my opinion is taken on board i'm no the one running the appeal.

The people who are running it just now - they are the only ones who should really have a say. I think the time for whould we or shouldnt we has passed for now.

Reading the other thread it would appear it hasn't, geordie.

C Mc has stated what most of the steering group believe, but this is not a final decision.
If people are that strongly for registering then we need to know how many are feeling that way.

Anyway, your opinion counts as much as anybody elses - you've made a contribution - you can have your say.

So you drew the short straw eh Carey?

I'm glad I wasn't party to all these e-mails discussing this one. Glad to hear the door is always open to a change of mind, but the important thing is to build on Lithuania and make sure things carry on.

Keep up the good work.

Well summarised C Mc.
I've been against then for charity status and always open to suggestion and persuasion. Based on posts, emails etc I've opted for the "ain't broke, don't fix it" but leave it open to future discussion at a later date.

..and on the other hand, there are more people willing to be involved if there were clearer roles, aims and accountability.

This is in no way a critisism of the work and effort done so far.
Perhaps the bulk of the reluctance from the unofficial steering group is because they are run off their feet at the moment, and think they will be burdened with even more work.

I worry aboot all my pals in the steering group because in its current form, it only takes one comment, accusation or rumour for the whole party to come crashing down.

What's that wrong with being more organised (in purely a paperwork sense), getting a few more volunteers AND potentially getting 28% more donations.
(Plus £500 charity matching from the likes of Lloyds TSB)

Not to mention the big business donations, which have been superb up till now.

Think how much more can be achieved if its a 'real' charity?

*Tin hat on hiding behind C Mc*

Cheers,
Tam

As one of the 'steering group' members, i would like to say that the decision has been made. The SA is staying the way it is. As Carey has said 'for the moment the SA will remain as it is.

This can be reviewed at a later date, but i feel it would be prudent to leave it until next year and see how we get on with Norway and Germany.

In fact this could be a good oportunity for someone/people who are not currently on the steering group to come forward with ideas regarding the above, especially Germany as nothing has been done re this as yet.

Tam, we can see you have put alot of time in posting your view on this matter, re making the Appeal regestered, it is now time for you to either support it, in its current format, or maybe, and i hope you don't, leave it alone.

I do hope that people will respect the decision that has been made, so we can now concentrate on fundraising and organising the next 2 trips.

Cheers

John

As one of the virtually anonymous members of the steering group, I opted to keep the SA informal. I've sat back and watched the more active members deliver a lot in a short time and the amount of emails that have flooded my inbox are testament to the sheer amount of work and dialogue that has gone into the SA. For those not privy to the emails, I can assure you that the wider opinion and support of the TAMB has been a key objective. Therefore, if you have no constructive comment to make, please don't make any at all.

The wheels are rolling on this and that's happened because a few people ahve had the gumption to get off their arse and get busy. I take my hat off to them.

What those outside the steering group need to realise is that the organisation of the appeal is fluid - in other words, it's up to those involved what happens. If you feel strongly about the way it's run - then ask to get involved and work with them. Objectivity is vital if the best interests of the appeal are to triumph.

Keep up the good work - the benefits to others are there for all to see.

Just out of interest, how does someone go about getting involved in the steering group? There are a lot of posts saying - if you don't like it, get involved - but none that actually say how to get involved.

I'm not detracting from what's been done so far - far from it. The lassies and fellas who have taken control have done a tremendous job....anyone who doubts that should take a look at the photos from the kids home in Vilnius and talk to anyone who was there.
