GET A LIFE!!! |
I have seen threads on this topic before but rather than try and find them again I will give you my own personal experience before I forget.
I have just been in Vilnius and travelled from Glasgow to Copenhagen and thenCopenhagen to Vilnius.
You can also do Edinburgh-Copenhagen etc....
If anyone is arriving in Riga before heading down to Vilnius the bus journey I was told by someone who did it that day was only 3 hours.
You can also fly to Vilnius from Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga I met somone who flew from Riga it cost him £80 return and I am sure it would not be too much more from Tallinn or even Helsinki.
You could also go via Prague,London direct or in fact you could see if there were any spaces available on the HBE charter.
Accomodation is plentiful and very varied in price, I would recommend staying as near to the city centre as possible. A taxi ride from the airport to the old city takes about 20 minutes and costs around £5. The price of beer well that varies tremendously depending on where you are but a pint was about £1 in most places and a wee bit cheaper in the local boozers. A damn fine meal will cost you no more than a fiver unless of course you are wanting to impress anyone with you and decide to eat in a fancy establishment
The train to Kaunas where the game is most liklely to take place takes about 1 hour and they run frequently.
I hope that gives you all some ideas for travel etc.
If you have any other questions you would like answered ask and I will try and give you an answer.

How much was the flight all in, and who did you fly with? Was it from Glasgow INT or Prestwick?

I flew Glasgow not prestwick and it cost me £290.00 return. I am sure you could look to do it cheaper going via Helsinki or something.
Alan I am a self appointed globetrotter and international alcoholic and in no way are the expenses of my trip covered by anyone other than yours truly and likewise the opinions expressed are mine and mine alone certainly not the SFA.
To get from Germany Alan I dont know but I am sure there are flights from Germany. I would not recommend the train through Poland etc.. and would definitely avoid all travel through Belarus.
Hope this helps a little.

Cheers for the enthusiastic response Graeme - however, if ye check ma profile I'm already in Bertiland. So, am no really wantin' tae go fae Stanstead! However, the Berlin - St Petersburg train may be an option although wi ma luck I'd fall asleep and end up in Siberia!! Think I'll stick wi the direct flight Frankfurt - Vilnius (knowin' I'll get off at the end) and at least some of you guys might think of doin' Ryannair - Frankfurt/then bus to the main train station (1Hr 30 mins)/then train (3 stops aboot 15 mins) oot tae Frankfurt International. Plus ye git tae go past the Waldstadion where Scotland took aon Yugoslavia in 74'...

No need for Visas just a current passport.
Oh yes I forgot to tell you that the young lady at the passport desk on the way had a lovely smile and looked a little like Natalie Imbruglia
The train from Berlin to Saint Petes would take forever and may require a Visa depending on its routeing. i.e. through Kaliningrad or Belarus

Fresh ideas |
Ruary,
I've been to Vilnius a number of times since we first played there and, although I agree with most of what you say, I would point out a couple of things.
Why is the game most likely to be played in Kaunas?
The national stadium is in Vilnius and the majority of games that they have played recently have been played there. Do you know something we don't?
I've not been to Kaunas myself, but it has a large student population so wouldn't mind if the game was to be played there even though I doubt it will be.
Buses to Riga take around 5-6 hours not 3. I got a lift to Riga for the match last time and it took about 3.5 hours. I can't believe a bus would be quicker.
Also flights to/from Riga are not great. I think there are only 3 a week. Buses are the best bet as they are cheap and run twice a day - even though it takes a long time. Personally, I would try to convince a local to drive you. They would do the journey for about $100-$150
Everything else you say, I agree with and I can't wait to go back again. (Don't even think I can wait till next April!)

I can second TartanAli's convince the locals routine. I used to live in Litho many moons ago where I developed a raging alcohol habit that has long since spiralled out of control.
In Lithuania and Latvia there are plenty of folk who would drive ye about. I used to do it all the time. It's miles faster than public transport and if a few of yis club together it's very cheap.

Tartanali the reason I say Kaunas is because that was what I was told by three different Lithuanians I was speaking to when I was over there. They told me to expect the game to be played in Kaunas as the national Stadium in Vilnius did not meet UEFA standards I was not in a position to argue with them and took what they told me on face value. As Kaunas is only 50 miles from Vilnius it probably does not make too much difference to us anyway.
