GET A LIFE!!!

Listening to the radio this afternoon I heard some english people say how happy they were that the"Argies" were out a couple even said that gave them more joy than an english win, there has also been a lot of gloating from them at the demise of the French,so it seems we all do it then,I've no problem with wanting to see another team beat what I do have a problem with is we in Scotland getting fed the politically correct line to back the english while it seems OK for them to gloat over other countries failures.Come on Denmark[I've Danish relations really]

I don't think it's okay. I for one feel quite sorry for the common Argentine who is likely as not penniless and was hoping for a good cup run to lift his or her spirits. I hate their players but that's diff'rent. Yes we have shitheads in England too but I hope not as many.

Fresh ideas

So what's new?  The **** have been anti-German for years yet they slag us off when we support teams against them?  It's fitbaw rivalry - simple as that.

"Yes we have shitheads in England too but I hope not as many." - As many as who Kernie??? Whose paranoid now!!

You've got to admit the English media are taking great delight in the fact that argentina and france are out. I've had talksport on most of the day (hawksbee and jacobs are class) and the headline of the day (and remember this is their world news slot). went as follows [paraphrase].....

England fans were enjoying a double celebration, not only are England through to the next phase, Argentina are on their way home, 1st time since blah de blah de blah.

So this basically implies that people are celebrating another teams defeat as well as their own victory. Yet this seems fine in England and when Scottish fans do it, they are accused of being "bitter Jocks". You've got to admit Kernie that their is definite double standards in the English media as far as this is concerned.

By the way, just and observation, but what's the difference between calling a Pakistani a 'Paki' and an Argetinian an 'Argie'?

Agree with the double standards comments - but you have to realise that they just don`t know they are doing it. I was exchanging banter with a guy in another forum and he said he hates germany, argentina, france and italy and then said he was not a racist. I think he is right - not racist, just a xenophobic psychopath. But I suppose it`s acceptable to hate anyone who stands in the way of you winning the world cup or doesn`t speak english when you go on holiday or don`t serve greasy food in their restaurants.

Whatever. Knee jerking merrily away I see.

Speaking - yet again - for myself, I do not hate any country or people and do not take any especial joy from other teams' losing. I just can't get excited about it because I know there are fans exactly like me in France and Argentina who will be absolutely gutted today and... that just doesn't give me any pleasure. I will be gutted too when my country goes out so I just don't see the point in going into vindictive mode. Life's too short.

That said, we would be perfectly justified in celebrating Argentina's elimination since it makes certain that we can't meet them again in this world cup

"You've got to admit the English media..."

Yes dunfyginger, I will admit that the English media are anything and everything terrible under the sun (although whether you can define an 'English' media is another question). But in turn I ask you to admit that your media is also mostly screaming shit which is just as wont to play the xenophobia card when it so desire.

WW: plenty of Pakistanis call each other 'Pakis' so it isn't really such a terrible word. No different to calling Afghans 'Afghanis' or Turkmenistanis 'Turkmenis'. As for 'Argies', it's not a word that I use but plenty of scots as well as English do so no moral high ground there I'm afraid.

Kernie - some sections of the Scottish media spout absolute bile no question. Whilst I stand by everything I've said about the English media's comments re:Argentina, I suppose I cant blame yourself for that...even though it would be handy. I just cant understand why it seems to be acceptable behaviour to bash some countries south of the border, but deemed parochial etc in Scotland.....??

Agree with you about the argentine people, they could have done with something to cheer about. Their current situation is far more important than fitba in the grand scheme of things...and thats saying something if you realise how high fitba ranks in my list of priorities.
