If you haven't tried this one already, it would have to be Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell

Fresh ideas |
Two excellent books on Spanish Civil War :
1) Voices from the Spanish Civil War - Personal Recollections of Scottish Volunteers in Republican Spain
1936- 39. By Ian MacDougall. First published in Great Btitain in 1986 by Polygon, 48 Pleasance, Edinburgh EH8 9TJ.
2) Memorials of the Spanish Civil War - The Official Publication of the International Brigade Association By Colin Willims. Alan Sutton Publishing Ltd, Phoenix Mill, Stroud, Gloucesteshire.
Two uncles of mine and their sister (all 3 now sadly passed on ) went to fight in Spain as part of the Scottish batallion of the International Brigade - Tom Murray, George Murray and Annie Murray - their stories were remarkable. Thre is a very interesting commerative stone in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh.
Hope ths is some help to you.
Remember - the future is bright - the future is TARTAN.

Cheers, just the kind of thing I was looking for. I think that histories with a personal perspective tend to be easier to read.
