GET A LIFE!!!

well, since the positive response from the BBC telly prog on ally, and with the 25th anniversary of the argentina 78 finals coming around, mick north croy and myself would like to float this idea to y'all...
mick would set up an account and accept donations of £1.00 each from each board member (any monies left over would go to..maybe the sunshine appeal?), the plan is to get a commerative cut glass decanter produced, with a suitable inscription from us all, and have TAMB members present ally with it. lets have yer thoughts on this one asap, as we'd like to get cracking on the glassware production...

I think we are celebrating the fact that he has Alzheimers and people feel sorry for him rather than any 'achievements' he may have had as a manager.

There are many more deserving cases.

Nice idea, although i think it should have come from ATAC.

It'd be celebrating a past manager who really sparked the imagination and still does.

Wee sing about him at the top of our voices whnever the opportunity arises don't we?

Scottishmagpie/Tam - I assume then, that you guys don't sing along to Ally's Tartan Army before games etc?

Watching the programme i found it sad to think that he possibly still thinks the TA hates him, whereas the truth is the opposite, form what i've seen and heard. Rightly or wrongly (in terms of results) he's taken on legendary status. I'd rather commemerate Ally than Broon, even if the latter got the results.

Well said C Mc.

Ally might not have been the best but he had us all living in dreamland...well until the team got to Argentina.

I agree.  We could do with a bit more cockiness now. It's easy to be right when you think you'll lose.

There's alway a more deserving cause, but I'd chip in for Ally.

Anyway, what do you mean no achievments?  He won the League Cup for Aberdeen

I bought the whole thing hook, line and sinker.  Thought we were going to win the world cup, the works.  I also remember the feeling afterwards as well.  I was young and foolish enough to be taken in by it all but old enough to still remember it all.  Don't get me wrong, I don't hate McLeod.  I certainly used to but I'm past that now.

Bottom line was that we had a squad of exceptional players and did absolutely nothing.   Maybe we never really had a chance of winning but we should have done a lot, lot better.  Everything single thing that went wrong with Argentina you can lay at the feet of McLeod, from the complete mess that was the Peru & Iran shambles to all the off the field antics.  The buck stops with the manager.  Maybe if he'd spent less time on Blue Peter and advertising carpets and had actually taken the time to watch the opposition play, maybe we wouldn't have egg all over our faces.

Argentina '78, classic strip.  Gemmill's goal against Holland, one of the best of all time.  Ally's Tartan army, great football record. All the rest - complete crap.

no, no , no , no
I mean it's a good idea commerating him when he is still sith us (well in body anyway).

Do you think Motherwell would have a Davie Copper stand if he was still alive?  Do you think Fife would have a Baxter statue if he was still alive.
These people should have their achievements marked when thay can appreciate it themselves.  (Law, Dalglish etc....  what about a wee memorial to Jinky Johnstone at Largs?)

Fresh ideas

Hi Fellas

First time on the board.  Had to reply to this.  Last year we (Armadale Sons of Wallace) asked Ally to our St Andrews Night.  We contacted his daughter but the Great Man was too ill to attend.  However as a gesture we raised £200 for Alzheimers and sent it to the Charity.  Told you in Lithuania I read the board Ruary!

A wee bit surprised at the negative comments so far, but thats life.

I think after 25 years its time to drop  any grudges people may have, if that`s what yer like, ah wouldn`t want tae fall out with you

I was only 12 at the time but I can vividly remember WC78, the hype, the backing, the carpets and perms and the support of a nation, whens that ever happened again, even the bookies had us at 7/1 to win it. Sure it went tits up, but no other team has suffered that have they ?
I still have great memories from that time and that won`t change.

This idea came about a wee while ago just after the Ally McLeod programme, and a presentation or gift was suggested, I mentioned on the thread that some of the ATAC guys might want to take it up, I think so far nothing has been done. This is not a criticism, I am a member of WESTA and have not put it to them to raise the issue with ATAC because I have not managed to the last couple of meetings.

Myself and mr shangalang spoke about this before the Iceland match and decided to do it this way.

Ally got a lot of hate mail and pelters after Argentina and we just want to let him know that a lot of us still think fondly of him and would like to show our appreciation. Nothing wrong with that is there ?

If you don`t like it, don`t contribute, simple

If you would like to donate, please send a cheque or postal order or a £1 note to me, my address is in my profile

cheers

Maybe another donation to Alzheimers would be more sensible, as I'm sure the man himself would still be too ill to attend a presentation.

Anyone here remember the Kincorth riots after the Peru game?
