How was the performance of the U21's tonight?  Any good signs there?  I didn't see it as I don't have Sky.

The performance was pretty good, all things considered and we had as much of the game as the big Danes. I think if we had played more attacking wing backs in the McNaughton, Agathe mould we would have won comfortably.  Too much had to come through the middle!
A run down on individual performances.
Souter ( OK - could have been better positioned for the goal and had the odd barthez dribbling moment)
McGregor (Missed one cross but safe otherwise)
McCunnie (Very impressive, good positioning and reading of the game..if only he could grow an inch or two!)
Dowie (A bit raw and caught out of position once or twice but one for the future)
Doig (OK)
Stewart (Blew hot and cold.. I think he thinks he's a better player than he is)
Kerr (worked hard but doesn't look up to it at this level)
Hughes (Started poorly and was pushed off the ball too easily.  Much better second half, till faded near the end)
Murray (Tried very hard but looks out of position as a wing back.  Contributed nothing going forward)
Canero(Solid display and took his goal well.  Never looked likely to get past his opponent though)
Malloney (singled out for some rough stuff by the danes but looked our best player in first half)
O'Connor (Some delightful touches from the big man though he also looked cumbersome at times.  Missed a real sitter)
Mcfadden (Looked a real class act when he first came on.  Less evident when he dropped behind the front two)
McManus (Worked hard and made one half chance for himself)
McLean (Don't think he touched the ball when he came on late).

Plenty of good young talent on show and played pretty well considering that its been ten months? since they last had a game. Five of the first team also qualify for the under 21s so plenty hope for the future.
John D summed up the performances ok but its the first time Ive ever agreed with a match report.
Think we are on the right track.

I thought it was a very positive performance. Certainly in the second half we were the better side. Canero was very lucky with his goal, it took about three fortunate bounces off of various pairs of legs before it popped up infront of him 6 yards out. Danes Goal was one hell of a strike, although i thought the keeper could have dealt with it. Hughes hit the outside of the post when it looked easier to score and we constructed several other good chances. Maloney hit a free kick wide of the post, which he has scored in the past, wee bit too much spin on the ball. Over all though, good performance and alot of positives for Herr Bonhoff can take from the game.

Thought it was also quite a good performance.  Mcfadden looked a real threat when he came on, what a player.  We were kind of fortunate with the goal but they all count.  A lot of good things to take from the game.  Also the Danish under 21's meet up every week so they spend a lot more time together than our under 21's.

Very impressive performances from the young lads,  I Dunno about you but i always remember our U-21's losing to teams like Denmark,Norway, in matchups and struggeling by the wee teams too, But it look exicting at most points and it'd be a nice way for Scotland to play if they followed suit with attitude and perfomance hopefully more for thebig lads against denmark the morra.

Denmark had that great bit of class overall though but i thought we were the better side 2nd half and should've won the game, Their big defender at the back Bischoff was outstanding so solid and he plays for man city, expect to see him in their lineup at somepoint this season along with the striker bechman his goal was fabby.

on scotland front.. McFadden was excellent as ever when he came on, O'Connor put in a good shift in attack , missed a few chances but did reasonably well holding up ball and that. Maloney put in a nice wee 45 mins got pushed off ball a bit but looked sharp, Canero impressed with his runs on the right-hand side i always thought killie played him in defensce but looked good at right wing, Stephen Hughes and Michael Stewart had very good games aswell for us , some great movment and passing from them together worked well along with newcastle kid brian kerr.

Overall a very good Scotland performance.... and hopefully more of the same tomorrow with a xtra goal in our favour..

moment that i enjoyed most-gotta to be tam mcmanus kicking the ball at the danish centre half.. and his face after wards. hehe

Thought it was an incouraging performance. The guys played well. Pretty solid at the back, thought Murray had a good game, but needs to work on his attacking play. Hughes was spot on in midfield and made some great runs along with Canero. McFadden, O'Connor & Malloney all looked dangerous at times. Bring on the seniors.

A very good game of football with some neat stuff being played. In the end, I think 1-1 was a fair reflection of the effort applied by both teams.

I thought Stewart and Hughes were class.

Fair enough Stewart seemed to drift out of the game in spells but when he wants to make a pass or skin someone or make a saving tackle, he can. Sometimes however, I thought players around him didnt have the same vision (ie: Canero should have been attacking the space where Stewart played the ball instead of expecting the ball to come straight to him).

Hughes also showed some brilliant touches. McFadden looked awesome when he came on - not a very big guy but very fast and very strong.

Wasnt as impressed with McCunnie as others were. O'Connor started well but found it more difficult as the game wore on. McManus wasnt too bad during his short spell.

Not sure who the guys were at the back but they looked solid enough.

All in all, more games like this and it will be good preparation for the young players. Thoroughly enjoyable match!

AR.

I was also impressed with the way our lads played.

However, I was quite surprised to see one of our most promising boys not selected for the under 21's. Dundee United have a good crop of under 21's none more promising than Stephen O'Donnell. Behind the scene's he is widly regarded as an exceptional talent. I know he is only 18 and is in the Scotland under 19's and was in Ireland recently in a under 20's squad but he clearly has the ability to play at a higher level.

I hope this player and others like him are noticed by our new under 21's coach.

Lets hope the senior team play as well tonight and produce a win to give confidence for the Euro qualifiers coming up.

I think considering this group of players had never played before and the fact that the senior squad has at least three u21's in it tonight we did quite well. Our u21 team does go through phases of being poor and then really good. I think we have reached the semi final of the European u21 championships twice in the last 10 years, I certainly remember watching games at Pittodrie involvong Germany and Sweden back in 1992. Back then Lambert, Jess, Booth and Gerry Creaney(!) were the stars of that team but with the exception of Lambert, who needed a move to Germany to get any international recognition, what happened to the rest of our youngsters from that generation. The same could be asked of the u16 team in 1989, we don't seem able to make the jump between youth, u21 and senior ranks the way other nations do. In 1989 we beat a Portugese team with a young Luis Figo in it but that Portugese team went on to become world youth champions twice in a row and many are still playing for Portugal now.

I look at the young strikers we have now: O'Connor, McManus, Maloney, Mackie, Kyle, Gary Wales (all of whom are good SPL players) and just pray one of them becomes Joe Jordan (my money's on O'Connor so long as he stays away from the Old Firm).

Obviously I'm bored today and can't wait for 6 o'clock so I can go to the pub but I'd far rather be on my way to Pandora's.

Very impressed by the performance but a little disappointed I didn't see more TAMB T-shirts. Apart from Shotts15 (or some such number), who I caught a glimpse of on the way home, I didn't see anyone sport their TAMB wares.
