DON HUTCHISON is set for a sensational return to Scotland's team in time for the start of the European Championship qualifying ties.
National team boss Berti Vogts got the pre-season boost he needed last night when the West Ham star revealed that his return from an horrific knee injury was well ahead of schedule.
Hutchison damaged the cruciate ligament in his knee last season.
It was originally feared that he'd be out of the game until Christmas at least. But Hutch has returned from a medical consultation in Canada with what almost amounts to a clean bill of health.
And that puts Scotland's most dangerous player in line for the visit to the Faroe Islands in September and the game with Iceland in Reykjavik that follows in November.
Hutchison said: "I went to Canada to meet Bryan Day, the surgeon who performed the operation on my knee, and what he told me has put a smile back on my face.
"In his expert opinion I am well ahead of schedule.
"It's still difficult to put an exact date on when I'll be able to play first-team football but it looks as if it will be some time during the autumn.
"This is great news because it means I could be in contention for Scotland's European qualifiers if I'm selected."
Hutchison is not only a certainty to be selected. Vogts is so short of class acts he may decide to drive to London and personally chauffeur the player back to Glasgow.
In the meantime Hutchison is happy to see light at the end of the tunnel. He said: "Having a serious injury is very difficult to deal with on a psychological basis. Any positive news is extremely welcome.
"This is a big boost for me - a major step forward. I've also been given the go ahead to start running again and that is a nice hurdle to overcome.
"I'm going to be clocking up hundreds of miles at West Ham's training ground but for once in my life I don't mind one bit."
