UK Sport have come out in support for Scotland Euro 2008.  This is from the BBC web site.

Scotland's bid to host Euro 2008 has won the backing of both UK Sport and the man behind England's bid for Euro 96.   UK Sport said it was prepared to contribute over £425,000 to the cost of the Scottish bid if a 'single nation' bid, meeting Uefa's criteria, materialised.

Simon Lyons, the man charged with co-ordinating the Scottish bid for Euro 2008, told BBC Sport Online UK Sport's backing was invaluable as it constituted almost half of the £1m required to put forward a bid.

Glen Kirton, the tournament director of Euro 96, underlined the economic benefit to Scotland of hosting the tournament.

With the Scottish Executive yet to agree to help fund a bid, Kirton stressed that the initial outlay of £80m would be far outweighed by the boost to the Scottish economy hosting the event would provide.

Lyons admitted Kirton's comments were exceptionally helpful.

"It is great to have an endorsement from a person who ran the most successful football tournament this country has ever seen," he told the Scotsman.

Lyons said he did not expect an official decision from the Executive until the end of the month, but added that it would be ideal if a decision was taken before the Euro 2004 draw in Porto on Friday 25 January.

That would allow the Scottish bid team to lobby the decision makers at Uefa in the knowledge that they had the full financial backing of the Scottish Executive.

Nations considering a bid to host Euro 2008 must lodge their intention to bid with Uefa by the end of February.

Looks like UK Sport still think it's worth backing. This is from the SFA.

WELCOME SUPPORT FOR EURO 2008
14 March 2002

UK Sport today confirmed that it will back the joint bid from the SFA and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to host the 2008 European Football Championships.

The Scottish Executive and the Irish Government, alongside the SFA and the FAI, have joined forces to bid to secure the rights to stage the event after the Irish Government gave its full support to the project last month.

UK Sport, which co-ordinates and supports bids to bring major sports events to Britain, is backing the bid with a Lottery grant of up to £320,000 from its World Class Events Programme.

Simon Lyons, Marketing Director for the Euro 2008 bid at the SFA, commented: "It's great to have an endorsement from UK Sport. It's fantastic to know that UK Sport is confident of our win-ability and has confirmed this confidence by supporting the bid."

Sir Rodney Walker, Chairman of UK Sport, said: "UK Sport's World Class Events Programme has supported the staging of twenty European and World Championships in Britain over the last two years, with the injection of more than £2 million of Lottery funding.

"Staging the European Football Championships, the second largest football tournament in the world, would bring massive benefits to both countries, from the economic investment to the legacy of sports development that lives on even after the event is over."

Scotland and Ireland, together with the six other candidates, will take part in an exhibition at the UEFA Congress in Stockholm next month to demonstrate the strength of their bids to member associations, the public and the media. Detailed bidding documents have to be submitted by May 31 and UEFA will make inspection visits to each of the bidding countries between August and October. A final decision is due to be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee in December.

Oh thankyou so much UK Sport for saying you'll gie us 0.04% of the investment required. I feel so much more confident in the bid now.
