Something to say |
OK, now we have the luxembourg, dutch and french reps saying positivie things (not outright backing I admit) plus a recognition that our bid is the one that makes financial sense to UEFA as we can sell more tickets. In addition a minority of fans in Vienna have unfortunately highlighted an Austrain hooligan and policing problem whih was not apparrent euro-wide till now. Also the Irish stadia issue seems in hand. And we're going to join the euro.
Any negatives your end sonny ?

From The Irish Times:
Ireland's bid rivals dealt serious blow by riots
The main rivals to Ireland and Scotland's bid to host the European Championships in 2008 were dealt "a major blow" after rioting by Austrian fans at the weekend.
A Senior Scottish Nationalist MP, Angus Robertson - who is the the SNP's foreign affairs spokesman - said violence at the friendly between Rapid Vienna and Arsenal proved Austria had a "policing and hooligan problem".
The match in Eisenstadt had to be abandoned with 20 minutes left when Rapid fans clashed with police and the players were forced to take cover.
Robertson said he believed UEFA would take account of Saturday night's events when deciding who will win the race to stage Euro 2008.
"I have no doubt this is a major blow to the bid by Austria and Switzerland for the 2008 European championships," he said.
"Despite the fact the majority of Austrian and Swiss football fans are overwhelmingly non-violent, this incident has underscored a policing and hooligan problem in Austria.
"This is a problem for Austrian football and I'm certain UEFA will take it into consideration when assessing the joint Austrian-Swiss bid. This also shows how important it is for Scottish and Irish fans to maintain their outstanding record of friendly and non-violent behaviour."
The trouble broke out when local fans fired rockets on to the field and, as police moved in to stop them, bottles and seats were hurled at them.
"These people are not Rapid fans," Rapid Vienna's president Rudolf Edlinger said.

Please note:
Thius incident in January took place purely because of the (delete as appropriate) Nazi/English/**** my members of the Rangers support. Although some of our minky fans didn't do us any favours either, may i also take this opportunity to thank the West coast media for their oh so kind decision to almost entirely blame us!

Don't think this hooligan thing will make much difference. UEFA will be aware that we've had our domestic problems too. Other countries have won it with much bigger holligan problems. e.g. our overbearing nemesis.
Our chance lies in charming the voters and hoping that UEFA don't go Aust/Switz coz it's central Europe and Germany get the world cup 2 years afore.
Still think on paper Aust/Switz is the favourite but the votes don't necessarily reflect that. All to play for I think.

I agree Jam that hooligan problems will not play a big part in the decision but any incidents wont help.
Rowie,
Attaching blame is only important in terms of stopping any future problems.
Fans blaming each other will only fuel further trouble.
BTW before you jump to conclusions I am a Don and know what happened.

I was also there. I also seen what happened.
Winters got hit in the head by a missile from the Rangers support while he was taking a corner kick. There was such an upheavel, Winters couldn't get near the ball. A bulk of the Rangers support started chanting their sectarian/nazi pish (with some even wearing Eng'er'land tops!).
Then our contribution, Some absent minded chuchters in the **** Donald stand charged forward intimidating the Rangers fans, before some members from the far corner of the South Stand passed the police and charged the Rangers support.
A KEY INCIDENT: An old Rangers supporter got hit in the head by a Dons casual, his sob story was then printed in the press the next day. What the media forgot to mention was that the silly old fool was looking to cause trouble with the Dons casulas in the first place. When the Police took him away for a medical across the pitch, he then began to make gestures to the Dons crowd - Innocent victim eh? (Plus i remember he was from Motherwell - Another one in a growing trend).
But i do agree, this incident is in the past and was dealt with adequately enough. I doubt it will happen again.

The one hooligan factor that is generally overlooked is that it is very easy for English hooligans to travel to Scotland. Usually the bulk of the nutters get stopped whilst in transit but they will make it to Scotland. Uefa will be well aware of that.

"(Plus i remember he was from Motherwell - Another one in a growing trend)."
And don't I know it, the amount of Rangers and Celtic supporters buses leaving Motherwell is ridiculous. Obviously it's back to the old religious thing, some of them may have good reason for supporting a Glasgow team but most don't seem to care that they're leaving their local club to rot.
