EURO 2008 INSULT Jul 25 2002

MARK McGIVERN EXCLUSIVE

EURO 2008 rivals Austria have tried to sink the joint Scots/Irish bid - by claiming the Tartan Army are like English hooligans.

Interior Minister Ernst Strasser also backed his country's joint bid with Switzerland by suggesting that Scotland's ground security standards were poor.

Anyone else heard this from more reputable sources or is this just mair pash fae the Retard?

Just fund the hail article. Here it is:

GOOD FIGHT VIENNA Jul 25 2002

2008 soccer rivals Austria have the cheek to call us SCOTS violent

Mark Mcgivern Exclusive

RIVAL nations are trying to scupper Scotland's Euro 2008 bid by branding the tartan army as hooligans.

The baseless slur against the good name of our fans came from the Austrians, whose joint bid with the Swiss is based largely on a promise of tight security - and the implication Scotland would not be a safe venue.

Last night, at the launch of the bid in Vienna, politicians highlighted safety and security as their trump cards.

During a champagne reception, the post-conference chat centred on Scots fans' alleged "hooligan culture".

This from a bid whose celebrity figurehead is Arnold Schwarzenegger, an actor who built a career out of appearing in ultra-violent films such as Terminator and Predator.

One British journalist said: "Despite the Scots' world-renowned good humour and sense of fun and fair play, the chat over here was all about how Scotland isn't a fit host.

"Several people talked about how the Austrian/Swiss bid's best feature is the lack of a reputation for violence.

"There seems either to be a memory problem or genuine ignorance as to the phenomenal track record of the Scots and Irish fans.

"They seem to be lumping the Scots and Irish with English fans who have disgraced their country.

"These days, the entire world knows how to separate the 'English disease' from the rest of Britain."

Austria's Interior Minister Ernst Strasser said: "Austria and Switzerland are the safest countries in the world. The good infrastructure and the excellent service guarantee a peaceful and safe football feast."

Scots/Irish bid bosses refused to be drawn into a slanging match.

SFA chief executive David Taylor said: "The friendliness and good humour of Scottish and Irish supporters is very well recognised around the world .

"We won the 1998 award for being the best fans in the world and the Irish won it in 2002."

Tartan Army spokesman Ian Adie said: "We won the Fair Play award in 1992, the first fans to do so. Since then, our reputation has been impeccable."

One tartan army member's response to the slur was less diplomatic.

He said: "If Austria and Switzerland were bidding for a yodelling competition, then they could call the shots. Euro 2008 is rather more important."

Austria sparked international concern three years ago following the rise of its far-right Freedom Party.

The then party leader, Jorg Heider, was branded "fascist", "racist", a "neo-Nazi" and even the "New Hitler."

TARTAN ARMY LOVED ACROSS EUROPE

SCOTS fans have won praise from across Europe.

After Italia 1990, a Genoa police chief said: "Scots fans are a great example to others."

After France 98, Fifa made its annual 50,000-francs award to the No1 football association - Scotland.

In the same competition, Bordeaux's Chamber of Commerce, tourism office and Regional Council took out a full-page advert in the Record saying: "We will never forget your joie de vivre and your sense of fair play. Miss you."

The organiser of Euro 96 in England said: "Scots fans won't cause any trouble."

Our fans won the Fair Play award at Euro 92 in Sweden. One organiser said: "We could have used 10 policemen and that would have been too many for these good-natured fans."

thanks Jam - saw this on the front page of a Record someone was reading today on the train but I was hoping someone would post it here so I wouldn't have to go out and buy it

I am not sure if the Austrian dude is slurring the fans - surely UEFA can remember who they have handed out their own fair play awards to and can laugh off such a ridiculous claim - or the security arrangements in Scotland/Ireland vs Austria/Switzerland? If that is their trump card they must be pretty desperate - Glasgow police are well experienced at dealing with potentially dangeous football crowds (are the Austrians?), and even if Aus/Switz can be proven to be safer countries, we're still talking about W Europe, Sco/Ire aren't exactly Dagestan...

Doesn't surprise me that the other candidates would use tactics like this. Certainly, in France at least, the coverage of the trouble in Charleroi in Euro 2000 used the terms English hooligans and British hooligans interchangeably. And before anyone jumps in with "but there was a Welshman convicted too so they were British" it's not the same thing at all. I've lost count of the number of times I've complained by phone and e-mail about this. So, anyone looking to chuck a bit of dirt at us is going to try the hooliganism angle. Just need to hope that the friends the TA have made across Europe over the years come out and show it's not true.

The SFA/FAI will not be dragged into a similar slagging match.

Mr Taylor defended the good name of the Scotland and Ireland fans pointing out that we have won two major best supporters award and the Irish have just won best supporters at WC2002.

The only slagging I've heard of so far was when Berti said, its better going to a football country than a skiing country.

All this report shows is that Aus/Swi are starting to get worried if that's the best they can come up with.

One problem we are going to have to address is that of having England on our doorstep.  Whilst the vast majority of their fans are thoroughly decent blokes they do have a substantial hooligan element.   It is relatively simple to stop known hooligans from travelling abroad it but is much harder to stop them travelling from England to Scotland.

The UK government and the Scottish Executive are going to have to work very hard to stop these people from travelling and short of imprisoning them for the duration of Euro 2008 it may prove almost impossible.  You can make them report to local police stations on the day of England games but this won't stop them from travelling up for German, Dutch or Scottish games.

The potential presence of the English Hooligans is also likely to bring out the worst in the arse-holes that we have up here.

We can not be complacent, this is an issue that needs to be addressed.  Of course if we get independence by 2008 we can put up border posts and keep the hooligans out that way.

Hud the Bus..

If I'm not mistaken the quote about hooligans comes from a "British journalist".  Nowhere in that report does it quote the Austrian guy saying we are hooligans.  All he says is that Austria & Switzerland are safe places.  As I've never been to either I can't say for sure but that's the impression I get too.

This is probably just the "Official newspaper of the TA" trying to stir it. (again).

Does look that way broony, but i think the hack was just saying what the Skiers were implying! Uefa will know all about how well our fans behave and how safe and secure the ECF was. I think the Aust/Switz are beginning to panic!

Sounds like a panic reaction from the Austria/Swiss bid, maybe in response to the Guiness/Bells sponsorship. UEFA know the score with the behaviour record of Scots & Irish fans and won't be conned.

this is bad timing for Austria, but not a unique event - on the discussion page for the story on http://sport.kurier.at/ is the following (translated by Google):

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not understand....  ... that in our medium landscape nobody mentions the excesses around the friendship game of the Viennese Austria and Bavaria Munich.  There I believe have nevertheless the Austria fan the playing field stormed.....  And as was before a few months in Bregenz, where opposing fans at the playing field struck themselves......  The Salzburg fans throw bengalische torches/flares on small children.....  I as football and Rapidfan abhor each kind of force, but why one is not shocked only after soooo yesterday understands I.  I read hir only - eh clearly, the Rapidler, which orgen, blablabla...  There are such people with each association - in addition I heard that it would have come with the play of the Austria against Roma also completely scarcely to an excess......
------------------------------------------------------------------------

so.... violence at football games is not exactly unknown in Austria...

This season is about to start. I would not guarantee all will be peace and harmony in Scottish football. Hope I am wrong.

However fan trouble didn't stop England, Germany, Holland etc...
