PM lends "support" to bid.
First Minister Jack McConnell today claimed a “very successful” start to his Swedish mission to argue the case for Scotland and Ireland staging the Euro 2008 football championships.
Scotland and Ireland were already being seen as serious contenders with bigger and better stadia than other countries, he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tony Blair put his weight behind the joint bid, giving public backing to Scotland’s hopes.
“I know how passionate the Scots and Irish are about football,” said Mr Blair in a letter to the First Minister.
“The Uefa European championships is one of the greatest sporting events in Europe and I and wholeheartedly behind your efforts and those of Bertie Ahern to secure the tournament in 2008.
“I am certain that not only would it be an expertly-run and professional event, but that football would receive the warmest possible welcome if the championships come to Scotland and Ireland.
“I am therefore delighted to lend my personal support to the Scottish-Irish bid.”
Mr McConnell flew out to Stockholm yesterday with sports minister Mike Watson.
They were joined by Irish sports minister Dr James McDaid to make their joint pitch along with other would-be host countries at a Uefa congress meeting.
An Executive spokesman said Mr McConnell today met Uefa president Lennart Johansson, who came out of a meeting to see the First Minister, and Fifa president Sepp Blatter.
The First Minister said later: “This has been a very successful morning for the Scottish and Irish bid.
“We have taken the opportunity to get across to key Uefa delegates the message that we are two footballing nations who can deliver the best-ever European football championships and that the bid has the full support of the Scottish and Irish governments.
“What is clear is that we are seen as serious players, with bigger and better stadiums – and that the reputation of Scottish and Irish fans, and the strong backing of the UK government, are huge plus points for our bid.”

Strong backing from the UK government blah yakety sh*te. The millenium dome got strong backing from the Uk government as did England's world cup attempts. In fact the highland clearances got strong backing from the Uk government.
Blair is f*cking shallow, pompous, little pipsqueek, f*nnybaws w*nker who can boil in his own p*ss as far as I'm concerned. If McConnell wants to lick his sph*cter then that's his problem.

Succinct and to the point Sonny.
Agreed!
One Irish stadium means we're f*cked anyhow - so why are we wasting public money on junkets to Sweden for these tw*ts???

So presumably you all think it would be better if he had written a letter saying there's no way Scotland/Ireland should host the tournament?
Come on guys! We're stuck with a joint bid now so get behind it and welcome any support that it gets.

Without the backing of the government the bid would be a non starter. That it is now receiving solid support is good news - what would we say if they were just to say "oh good luck then". Now it has that backing the serious business of gaining support through influence will be passed to government agencies throughout Europe. We may be the best fans in the world but these things are not won and lost on our singing repertoire. As people are working on our behalf they have my support. Yes McC should have been brave enough to go for the single bid but thats now history. Yes - the Austria bid is very good but its all plans. Yes the Croke Park Q? remains unclear but thats for the Irish to sort out and Berti ahern does not want to look an erse after giving it his solid backing. And when the inspectors visit Scotland in September we will have the infrastructure in place, many of the stadia in place, the tradition and of course the reputation of our support. Still in wi a shout - I'd like to think so.

It's all very well getting backing from Tony the
Twat now, seeing as the Irish are struggling to come up with the goods.Blair knows we'll probably fail-hence the unreserved backing.
If they were that interested, they would have helped us succeed with a solo bid. They're not shy when it comes to spending money for a new national stadium for England, one that will leave Hampden behind no doubt.

The solo bid decision was made by the Scottish exec - that's the power of devolution. So TBs support for the joint bid should be welcomed - if he thought it was a duffer I am sure he would have remained quiet. And following that there are now a host of initiatives being launched across Europe through UK government agencies to make the bid a success. If nothing was being done then we would have cause to complain. Without that support the bid would be truly dead. Ye cannae hae yer haggis and eat it!

McConnell is under even greater pressure to deliver now, after the success of the European Cup Final.I don't think we'll see any more backsliding from the "Scottish Executive",i.e. Labour.
My infamous MSP,former 1st Minister Henry McLeish, was 100% behind a solo bid,but he has been silenced.
There would be an outcry if they didn't give the joint bid everything they,ve got, because it now looks like we have a great chance.
