Going to finland in july and was thinking of heading to talinn for a few nights. would the bars/nightlife be lively midweek (without the tartan army being there) or would it be better left until another time when we could stay a weekend. as much info as possible would be appreciated. cheers gents

GET A LIFE!!! |
BBC the last time I was in Tallinn I dont remember them having those long legged lovelies in tinnies
If they did i would be importing them by now and making gazillions
BBBB just get yourself into the square grab a pew and be prepared for ever changing scenery that will blow your mind.
PS remember and oil your neck
If you want more info e-mail me and I'll answer all your questions. I should know a little about the place as at the last count I had been there 35 times or was it that I was so bedazzled with the scenery I had to keep going back to make sure I wasn't dreaming

Talks too much |
From what I can mind, there are two good hotels....the one we stayed in was called the Central (I think!) and it was 4 star but only cost £30/night....Tallinn is dirt cheap!!!
Molly Malones is okay, but cos its on the square it is pretty pricey compared to some of the others down the side streets....to be honest there are loads of cheap good bars. Look out for the local ladies sitting without drinks...they are desperate for westerners to buy them one!
I seem to recall getting knocked back from the nightclub (Planet Hollywood?) cos I had trainers on....so bear that in mind too.

These days there are plenty of good hotels in Tallin. One good choice is Hotel express down near the port, (10 mins walk from the centre), which is like a travellodge.
It has only been open for a couple of years.

cheers guys. had a look and hotel express seems to be a good bet and not far to wander from the port. i take it drinks aren't too expensive in most places but cheaper off the square. what about helsinki as well as we'll be there for a night or two, expensive, lively at weekends.....

Helsinki,
Go to the eurohostel which is down by the port.
Speaking about £20 for a single room or £13 to share twin.
Basic pine furniture with bedding etc. Wouldnt run it down at all. been there 2 times.
Showers and toilets communal.
Go messing about on the internet and you will find its website.
Alternatively good hotel should be £25-£30 pp olthough I recall someone using the name Hotel Finland and sayng it was £15 a night.
Also dont get a taxi from the airport just take a bus and the normal service bus is cheaper that the Finnair bus.
They both kick you out at the railway station

I've stayed in the Eurohostel a couple of times. Last time was a few years ago right enough but I can certainly recommend it. Good clean rooms, cheap & no curfew. You get a discount if you are a member of the YHA.

Forgot to mention.
Take 1 of the hydrofoils rather than the ferry because its quicker.
I think 2 hours rather than 4.
Lindaline is cheaper than Nordic Jetline (about half the price I think)
Additionally if you look up their websites they both do combined package of the hyfrofoil and the same hotels that have been mentioned. Ie Viru, Central, Hotel Express.
Normal rate for express is about £20 pp.
If you go to Molly Malones ask for Big Davie from Clydebank ans say that Euan was asking after him although I might beat you to it.
I presume you know KLM are doing flights to Helsinki for £126 plus tax. (Edinburgh/Glasgow)

In Helsinki right now as I could not get a decent price
for Hong Kong.
Seemed like a good place to chill out.
Heading for Tallinn soon.
Molly Malones in Helsinki (upstairs) also is good most nights,
with live music and atmosphere.
Where do the Helsinki Two hang out?
