Trip Journal of EURO'96 Scotland Matches, June 1996
by Graham Muir

I was at all 3 of the matches down South, brilliant atmosphere, shame about McAllister.

I was at the Aston Hotel for the Holland game, never seen anything like it, opposing fans singing arm in arm. Apparently me and my mates were on Scotland Today singing with some Dutch bloke with a funny hat, street cred out the window now!

I found Birmingham's night life to be a bit of a let down. We arrived on the Sunday, via Whitley Bay. Our taxi driver in Birmingham didn't know anywhere open in Birmingham on the Sunday night, so we ended up getting a carry out, boring!

The night of the Holland game was something else. We ended up in O'Neils Irish Bar in Broad Street. It was one long party, added to that we all pulled birds that night, great day!

Ever since the championships, all me and the mates keep boring folk with is what happened the night before the Switzerland game. We went to O'Neils once more and found the place 50-50 full of Scots and Swiss fans. We sung all the old favourites and then when the night was finishing, something amazing happened.

The Swiss fans had a song, which I think goes to the tune of a Neil Sedaka number, don't ask what it is.
La, La, La, La
La, La, Lalalalalaaaaa
La, La, Lalalalalaaaaa
La, La, Lalalalalaaaaa
Scotland,Switzerland!

Both sets of fans sang this for 1 and a half hours! The pubs doormen tried to move us at closing, but the boys kept singing. Even when the police (all good natured) came in, we were not to be moved.

Eventually, at around 1.30am we moved outside. The police ended up blocking part of Broad Street for around 15 minutes, due to drunken Scots and Swiss performing the highland fling whilst singing that bloody song!
