Match Report
Very little can be said about this match ! It was straightforward - Scotland bombed - as simple as that. Seldom do the Tartan Army boo when the players leave the pitch but this was one of those occasions.
Estonia defended in numbers which made for one of the most frustrating matches I have seen for a while. Scotland pounded and pounded but could simply find no way through. Our lack of a goalscorer was more than obvious - Duncan Ferguson (Everton can keep him thanks very much - he looks like being one of those strikers that never does anything for Scotland - a Brian McClair or a Graeme Sharpe) is simply rubbish and McCoist is simply getting past his best. As the fans so neatly summarised : 'We couldn't score in a brothel'.
Both McAllister and Ferguson cames close at times but all in all. We were shit ! Estonia even broke loose - once - and might have scored if their attacker hadn't lost his nerve.
The fairest and loudest clap of the night was for the Estonian team as they left the park at the end of the game. Must admit though that they were pretty cocky about accepting the generous applause from the 2,000 Scotsmen supplying it. The referee got a right good boo and then we all went away again.
This has seriously dented our qualification hopes and basically nulified the excellent result we got at home against Sweden in late 1996. We are now back in the situation where we will have to battle with all and sundry to get ourselves into the finals - with Belarussia to come at home and away, anthing is possible - now we will have to sit back and hope that one of the wee teams beats one of the big teams (other than us). Nothing more to say.
