UEFA Women’s Championship Qualifier
Thursday 27 March 2003
GERMANY 5, SCOTLAND 0
Potsdam, Germany
Scotland began well when Megan Sneddon had the first chance of the game but pulled her shot wide of goal. It was not long before Germany made their experience show, after only 25 minutes gone Germany were awarded a penalty, that amazed Scotland, and scored through number nine Birgit Prinz. Donna James was sent off for a second bookable offence on 32 minutes, which means she will automatically miss the next qualification match against Ukraine. Inga Grings doubled Germany’s goal tally (40 mins) to make the half time score Germany 2, Scotland 0.
Germany started the second half as they finished the first, Grings scored again. Jane McFarlane making her competitive debut for Scotland was replaced by Amanda Burns and only six minutes later Grings achieved her hatrick for Germany. The Germans were absolutely dominant and demonstrated why they are European Champions, making it 5-0 through Prinz on 69 minutes. Scotland had an attempt in the last minute but the German keeper saved Fleeting’s effort.
Vera Pauw singled out Gemma Fay for praise “Without Gemma and her outstanding performance the score would have been much worse. We were naïve in our play and errors cost three goals. We need to learn very quickly to adapt to the pace of this level.”
Vera also praised the team saying, “I am proud of the attitude and team spirit they showed, they all fought very hard and although the score does not reflect this are a credit to Scotland.”
