We have got booked up in Gelsenkirchen, about 20 mins outside Dortmund. Tried to get digs in Dortmund, but left it too late, and was told I should try there.
Staying in the Intercity Hotel (similar to Novotel or Holiday Inn) Tues --> Fri.
Are we going to be the only ones flying the flag in Gelsenkirchen???

There's four of us staying in the Ibis Gelsenkirchen on the Wednesday night only, but we might no bother depending on result/party after!!

Anyone know what Gelsenkirchen is like and how easy it is to get to Dusseldorf and Dortmund by train?

None of the Borussia Dortmund fans have a good word to say about anyone from Gelsenkirchen because it's the home of their deadly rivals Schalke 04. They say all their fans are neanderthals! It's supposed to be a little bit of a rough and ready kind of town with a coal mining and steek making heritage. Most Scots therefore should well at home!!

just looked at trains to Dortmund....seem to be plenty getting there but only a few after game.....taxi for four might be a cheaper option as it is not too far....any one know about this.

After starting this post, I thought we would be the only footsoliders in Gelsenkirchen.....looks like it could be a mini party there with all this talk of drink

As for the transport :
Getting to Dortmund is easy during the day. The station is supposed on the mainline with the ICE trains running as well as the S2 trains. I don't see there being a problem.
As for getting back at night, the trains do run right throughout the night. Here is a rough idea of the times:
