Not sure how easy it would be to set up, but you could charge an annual membership to be able to join the site. Something like £5 a year would make a fair contribution to the fund.

Not a bad idea McSheep. We've discussed this in the past though and it's not really workable. There's too many problems, plus I think most people like the idea that anybody, anywhere in the world, can log on to this site and join in...

you could always make the membership payable after a certain amount of posts so that light users/guests wouldn'y pay and would leave the site open to anyone.

Membership could be done, but would need additional admin work and disabling free-for-everyone registration.
However, don't think that the funds would equal the number of members multiplied by X quid. As said in other post re boad stats, there are 'only' 400-500 'active' members. Most of them have anyway contributed to the Appeal.
The advertising? What; don't tell me you miss those pop-ups!
Well, need to check how it can be done within the program script.
Anyway, if we go for this then my suggestion would be to have a single monthly sponsor of the board. It means the firm would need to pay XXX quid to be sponsor for a month - that month there would be a banner with link or at least an announcement.
So, who is a volunteer to find the(se) firm(s)? It's easy to speak but let's do something (if we decide to go for it).

Called up a few of the travel companies that get mentioned regularly within the site and they said they would look over anything that was sent out to them regarding advertising. If the site developers want to have a think about the kind of cash, time period it would be on and if you'd host a page of 'special offers' etc and anything else you can think of, i don't mind chasing up a few companies to see what we can sort out.
