GET A LIFE!!! |
After a considerable amount of time and effort by various people involved in raising money and awareness for the Sunshine Appeal we now have our first beneficiary in sight.
Next year’s game in Lithuania has been deemed to be the first recipient of a bit of sunshine.
The guys involved in the appeal have put together a plan and are actively working on it as you read this.
The plan is as follows; we will first of all identify a worthy cause for the appeal. This is likely to be an orphanage or children’s home, where in Lithuania they have a lot less resources than we are used to in this country.
It is our intention to provide the chosen orphanage with various goodies deemed to be useful as well as some items of a more personal and fun nature.
We are going to make up Backpack/Schoolbags and fill them with items such as Pencil cases, jotters, crayons, colouring books underwear, socks, scarves, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, sweeties, cuddly toys, toys.
Each child will get their own backpack/schoolbag which they will then be able to use after we have long gone.
We would also like to buy some books for the orphanage from a bookshop in Lithuania as well as donating a cd player/radio cassette. This way the children will have reading books and something to play music on.
The day before the game we will go along and have a wee party with the children and give them their goody bags. We also hope to arrange and pay for the tickets, transport and supervision to enable the children to actually see the match.
So far we have organised the Backpack/schoolbags courtesy of Geo1903 [www.footballheaven.net] the mission to attain 100 pencil cases has been taken up by CMc who is going to ask people in his work to donate them. WarwickTartanArmy has not only arranged the scarves but is also contacting some suppliers to see if they will donate things like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. JimFaeKdy is speaking to the company that is arranging his charter plane to Lithuania to see if they are happy to transport all the goods, he also has a young lad Mark in his club who along with his father has agreed to supply all the sweeties and crisps.
So as you can see we have been fairly busy in the background getting the plan organised as well as already having some success in attaining some of the items.
Obviously the appeal has money available to buy whatever is needed but there are some items that some of you might be able to provide such as jotters/notebooks or something else that you feel is relevant. It may also be that you work for a company that is willing and able to donate an item or even some money to buy one of the items. If any one of you would like to volunteer to be responsible for acquiring any of the items mentioned or have any other good ideas then please post below.
It might not be a lot in the global scale of things but I personally think that what we have achieved here on the TAMB is quite fantastic, thanks to every one of you who has contributed in any way shape or form.
We will put regular updates on the progress of the Lithuanian mission on the board.

Ruary - that sounds like a fantastic idea! Our office has just done the Samaritans Operation Christmas Child thing where you fill a shoe box full of similar things to what you're planning to put in the backpacks and I know that, as well as providing all of us with a great feeling, they will be hugely appreciated by the kids.
Just one thing I'm unsure about. I thought the point in raising the money was to buy stuff to give to the kids - but it sounds like you're trying to get folk to donate stuff too, which would mean that folk end up giving twice. Obviously if folk have volunteered to do stuff, that's great, but why don't we just buy things like crayons and jotters?
If you need any help putting the backpacks together or anything like that, though, I'd be delighted to help out.

TS you are right about raising money to buy things which is our intention with regard to the books, cdplayer, match ticket,s transport, things required for the party etc. In fact we have arranged to buy the backpacks and Geo1903 has kindly let us have these at cost price thus saving a lot of money.
Some people were able to make specific donations or to help us buy items at a greatly reduced price which is great as it means the money we have can go a lot further. We do not want people to think they have to donate twice but there may be cases where for example a company could donate a load of colouring crayons or jotters or someone receives something that they do not particularly want for christmas that might be beneficial for the children. It may even be as simple as putting a tube of toothpaste or a toilet roll towards the appeal.
If you look at [http://www.icvilnius.org/charity.htm] you will see how desperately hard up some of these orphanages and charities really are and anything we can get as a donation will surely be appreciated.

Aye, fair enough Ruary - I never really thought about the cost of the CD player and stuff. I presume that Ali Bev will be supplying TA CDs for the player?
Maybe everyone should add something they don't want to their Santa list?

Just put out a real tear jerker to my work here in Bristol (complete with photos of the "big kick off" and will follow it up with a whip round.
The intention is to supply the CD Player / Stereo. I'll be pushing the "the more we get then the better the Stereo" bit, and the fact that we're Scottish and they're no' !!
Macro cards at the ready so should be able to get something pretty reasonable. I'll bring it up to the doo on the 22nd.

Nice one Rob
any colour but blue or ginger preferably we dont want all these kiddies having nightmares
Only joking mate a splendid gesture... if you do raise enough to buy one could you try and get one with a continental plug lest we might forget an adaptor... and what kind of party would it be if we didn't have any music.

Talking about music, how about we all donate a CD/Cassette from our collections so the kids have something to listen to other than We Have A Dream or Allys Tartan Army, otherwise they may come to hate us after the 54th time its played
Seriously though, we can give them the CD/Cassette player but they may not have the dosh to buy much to play on it, so a box full of CD's/Cassettes might be helpful as well, anyone any thoughts?

JillyX you are indeed a star, that is exactly the kind of thing that the homes are looking for ...of course not necessarily the kids
Perhaps if you want to e-mail me we can arrange collection and a chat about what wonderful Johnson and Johnson products would look good in a wee Backpack
It is ideas like this that we are looking for not really for people to have to dig into their pockets again.
And Reeky we all know that santa usually delivers some kind of musical pressie that is not exactly to our taste. If that is indeed the case please let us take them as after all the kids in Lithuania are not quite as fussy as us lot back here.

Talks too much |
As it's coming up to Christmas, why dont we all buy one extra present this year when out Christmas shopping. Why don't we all buy a colouring pack which contain colouring books and crayons which only cost about £3:00. I'm sure we could all give up the price of a pint to buy one of these!! just a thought!

I've got a colouring book which I bought to put in my shoebox for Operation Christmas Child but it wouldn't fit. I'll happily add some crayons and things to it - but what should I do with it then? Maybe we need to have places where we can collect the stuff?

I hope to get information on ages and gender of kids fairly soon and this would let anyone who wanted to buy an extra present have an idea who they are buying for. It might be that some clothing would be really welcome as well as toys, crayons etc.
Working on getting a bit more detail about who we are going to be doing things for and with in Lithuania and will post more info as soon as poss.
