GET A LIFE!!! |

Edward Plantagenet (Longshanks) still smarting from his army’s defeat at Stirling Bridge on September 11th 1297 planned to reap a terrible revenge on Scotland and William Wallace. In those times it was almost impossible to move an army great distances in the winter due to weather conditions, food etc. so any action would have to wait until the late spring early summer of 1298.
Edward I ordered Aymer de Valance the Earl of Pembroke to set sail from Flanders whilst Edward himself would march north with his main army. The idea, which was tactically correct, was to split Scotland in half and control the crossings on the Rivers Forth and Tay. Aymer de Valance and his forces were charged with taking Perth whilst Edward would take Stirling.
Aymer de Valance and his large army landed at Tentsmuir near Tayport and they began marching west towards Perth meeting small pockets of resistance on route. William Wallace had a stronghold in the area of Black Iron Side above Lindores Abbey and his forces were gathering to resist the English advance. He called upon Sir Duncan Balfour of Denmyln to gather men as was his right as Sheriff of Fife. Men marched to battle from Newburgh, Abernethy, Errol, Perth, The Howe of Fife and most ot the surrounding area.
On the 12th June 1298 a major battle took place on what is now referred to as Blackearnside. The battle was bloody with many casualties on both sides. Sir Duncan Balfour died on the battlefield. It is reputed that during a lull in the battle William Wallace brought water to his men from a stream that is now referred to as Wallace Brig. The battle resulted in a famous victory for the forces of Scotland under the leadership of Wallace.
Wallace and his wounded then visited Lindores Abbey where Wallace sought solace for his injured. A games were then held in celebration of the victory. These games are still held to this day and are the oldest highland games in the world. As a mark of recognition of the part played by the local people a plaque has been erected at the battlefield thanks to local donations. This plaque was unveiled on the 12th June 2003 by Councillor Moncreiff and a very much appreciated talk was given by local historian Prof. Ross Napier, who we have to thank for much of the research that has gone on into the battle.
Blackearnside hold their AGM on the 12th June every year on the site of the battle as a mark of respect to the brave people who gave up their lives on the field.
