GET A LIFE!!!

Spirit 1, Power 0
UNIONDALE, NY (Saturday, July 20, 2002) – Scottish sensation forward Julie Fleeting scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to help the San Diego Spirit defeat the New York Power, 1-0, at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. San Diego gains their first road win of the season and improves to 4-8-4, 16 points, while handing the Power their ninth consecutive loss.

The U.S. vs. Norway friendly match to be played on Sunday, July 21, in Blaine, Minn. took starters away from both teams. San Diego was without Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy and leading scorer Shannon MacMillan. New York played minus leading scorer Tiffeny Milbrett, Linda Ormen and Anita Rapp. The Spirit’s Shannon Boxx was also absent from the lineup, serving a one-game red card suspension for an intentional hand-ball in last week’s match against San Jose. Boxx’s club-record streak of 36 consecutive games played was snapped.

After a sluggish first half by both teams, San Diego held their ground defensively in the second half and created chances offensively with a strong counterattack with solid performances by first-half sub Jenny Mascaro, Lori Lindsey and Flo Omagbemi.

Fleeting, who joined the Spirit on July 8, has promptly tallied two goals and one assist in three games, and has a season team-high three-game point streak. Throughout the second half, she got behind the New York defense and threatened to put a shot past Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber, but her first five attempts were thwarted. “I wish I could have scored on those chances, but you have to put that out of your mind and continue to play," said Fleeting. "If you don’t, you will never put away any other chances you have later.”

Fleeting and perhaps the Spirit’s last chance to score came in the 90th minute on a counterattack started by Mascaro. From the left side of midfield, Mascaro sent a long pass to the right corner of the six-yard box, where Webber and defender Ronnie Fair bumped into one another allowing Fleeting to displace the ball from Webber and shoot the ball into the open goal from four yards out. “It was another great ball by Jenny, she had been putting me through all game. I am not sure what happened next, I think the keeper came out and got her hands to it, but I was able to play it and score," said Fleeting.

Spirit goalkeeper Carly Smolak allowed Fleeting to have her heroic moment late in the game after making three point-blank saves earlier in the half. Smolak, who earned her second win, looked sharp in her second consecutive start in goal. “Carly was very good tonight,” said Spirit interim head coach Kevin Crow. “She positioned herself well and when she made a save, it was a sure-handed catch.”

Jaclyn Raveia challenged Smolak with a shot form six yards away in the 68th minute, but Smolak dove and grabbed the shot on the goal line. Three minutes later, she scooped up a Tammy Pearman header inside a crowded goal box. In the 85th minute, Minna Mustonen drove a 12-yard shot towards the goal that was snatched out of the air by Smolak to preserve the shutout and enabling the Spirit to win the game.

Crow improves his record to 2-4-2 on the season, matching the mark of former head coach Carlos Juarez before his departure. “More and more it is about us taking care of our own game. If we play the game the way we are capable of, the results will come," said Crow. San Diego moves to within one point of sixth place Boston, and remains six points behind San Jose and Washington in their pursuit of the fourth and final playoff berth.

San Diego travels to Washington, D.C. next Saturday, July 27, 1 p.m. PT, to meet the Freedom in a nationally-televised match on PAX TV. The Spirit is winless against Washington in 2002 and will seek to score their first goal in this year’s series, as the Freedom have blanked San Diego by scores of 3-0 and 4-0, respectively. San Diego returns to Torero Stadium on Wednesday, July 31, 7 p.m. PT to face the Atlanta Beat on Corporate Night.

Great to see Julie doing well but we really should not let the Americans play football until they understand that phrases like "season team-high three-game point streak" are unacceptable.

And as for the stats at the end, I have no idea what:

SD – Julie Fleeting 2, (Jenny Mascaro 3) 90th minute

means - perhaps an envoy from the Sunday Post is needed to teach them how to write about football.
