For Lithuania next year, does anybody fancy arriving in Warsaw (Poland) on the Saturday (cheap flights), spending a couple of days in sunny Poland and then a most emjoyable 300 mile train journey to Vilnius on the Monday with the Helensburgh Tartan Army.  Muchos cheapos beeros!

How much do you reckon cheap flights to Warsaw would be.

Also dont get carried away with the idea of taking the train to Vilnius.

The direct train goes through Belarus and you need a visa.  Not possible to get one at the border so you would get kicked off.

I think its possible to get a train to the polish border (7 hours) and then you have to change train (stopover - how long i dont know) and then further train to Vilnius (2 hours maybe)

Guys last time around didnt know the train passed through belarus and go declined at  the border.

Funny thing is that they actually worked for railtrack and possibly should have known the route.

And if yer getting the bus ye can be ages waiting at the border getting thro passport controls. No fir youse, just that the tailbacks can go on. Well at least that wis the story a few years back anyway. I'd sort the Belarus visa oot masel.

BALTA are planning a long-winded route at the moment.

At present it looks like:

Sunday - Edinburgh to Stockholm via Stansted (cheap as) - spend the night in Stockholm
Monday - ferry to Tallinn - day and night on the pish there.
Tuesday - bus to Vilnius (6 hours) and 2 nights there
Thursday - bus to Riga (one night there)
Friday - ferry to Stockholm and flights home

Thought it might be an idea to make a mini-tour of it.

Piiiish

Bus Tallinn - Riga 6 hours

Bus Riga - Vilnius 5 hours

You can do a non stop but it takes 11-12 hours

I think you buy a return flight for about £120 from Tallinn to Vilnius.  Can be booked in Estonia

I checked the ferry - it only takes a couple of hours and there are about 5 a day.

Fair enough about the buses.  Are trains any quicker?

The Sweden to Finland/Estonia ferries are both overnighters.

They leave at 6pm (footpassangers need to be on by 5pm) and arrive at about 9am the next morning.

Same going back, its an overnighter.

The one that takes an hour is Helsinki to Tallinn which you should take if it turns out one if the Estonia ferries is the wee boat.

The big boat is magic, great craic but the wee boat is pish. Get the Silja one via helsinki instead.

Its 5/6 hours just to get down to Riga and vilnius is about the same again (depending on border crossings etc).

This is the way I would do it if I had the choice, but unfortunatley I'm and in and out kinda guy now!
ooooh errrr matron :-)

This route has already been considered. REF Independent 02/06/01  lithuanian airlines (02087597323); http://www.lal.lt, flies from Heathrow to Vilnius from £265. Cheap alternative Ryanair-08701569569; http://www.ryanair.com-from stanstead to Lubeck, a short hop on the train to Kiel and then the Lisco (003706155943) ship to Klaipeda. i believe a deal from a specialist travelagent with hotel/apartment could be the best option.

you could do a mammoth one :

helskinki  - St petersburg ( train ) - Estonia ( Train ) - Riga ( Bus ) - Lithuania ( bus ) - Warsaw ( train).

Check out the girls in St Petersburg!

You can get an open jaw ( in Helsinki / out warsaw ) pretty cheap if you shop around......

Klaipeda is on the other side of the country from Vilnius. When I lived there years ago the transport system was sh*te and it woud take ye some time (5-6 hours?) for the train tae Vilnius to Klaipeda. This may have improved but for those considering arriving in Klaipeda I suggest you check oot with yer travel companies connections to vilnius.

Youse are getting me all confused (which isnae hard admittedly). there is a few of us trying to organise a trip next year and we've been offered a few bizarre deals. 29hrs on a train from amsterdam, passing through every country you could imagine is the best one yet. If you stock up on 'supplies', 29hrs would fly by!

we tried dialaflight.com and started celebrating when we got quoted 203 quid edinburgh-vilnius direct. Unfortunately when we phoned up, this flight did not exist at this price and we were quoted 500 sheets MORE.

We've been told that with 11 months to go, more options will start to become available. If I hear anything more in the next couple of weeks, I'll post it up.

Aw the best,

dunfyginger!
