SCOTLAND SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT
12 August 2002
Berti Vogts has named a 24 man Scotland squad for the forthcoming matches
against Denmark and the Faroe Islands, with just one uncapped player, the
West Bromwich Albion midfielder, Derek McInnes.
Vogts also confirmed that Rainer Bonhof has joined the Scottish Football
Association as Under 21 Team Manager. He will have responsibility not only
for the Under 21 team, but also for bringing on Scotland's other youth
international teams to fit in with Berti Vogts' plans.
Welcoming Bonhof to Scotland, Berti Vogts said: "Rainer was my assistant at
the German FA for eight years and it was a very successful time. We share
the same philosophy. He is one of the best youth coaches around, and when he
worked with the German national youth teams they always qualified for major
championships. Here in Scotland, he will work not only with the Under 21s
but also the other youth teams and for the development of football in
Scotland."
Rainer Bonhof will have an immediate introduction to Scottish football with
his first training sessions with the Under 21s. A group of Scotland's most
promising young players will spend the next three days training with Bonhof
at the Sportscotland National Centre in Largs, and the best of them can
expect to be selected for Scotland's forthcoming three Under 21
internationals against Denmark, Israel and Northern Ireland.
