Today I was speaking to a Swedish workmate of mine whos husband and a few mates are out in Korea for the world cup.
Among many other things she was saying how the vast majority of the locals support England (when Korea and Japan are not playing) and wear Beckham strips.
Now my point is that as Scots we get a fair amount of slagging from the English for supporting their opponents and get accused of being narrow minded, insecure, have a chip on our shoulders etc.
From what I have been told from the Swedish fans neither they nor the Nigerians were particulalry bothered about the amount of non english foreigners supporting England when they played.
So is it really the case that the English have the problem for getting so heated about us supporting their opponents when they play?

BIG difference.
The locals out in Japan and South Korea are following England because they love our team. In much the same way that I imagine the TA welcomes any non-Scots who wish to follow Scotland, we English have no problem at all with others adopting us as their team.
What we DO find fairly pathetic is immediately claiming allegaince to a team simply based on who they are playing against.
One is a positive attitude, one is extremely negative.
Hope that makes things clearer

Thanks for at last agreeing that out attitude to england is a positive one
I'll bet they wouldn't be following them if some of the knuckledraggers had got into the country.

Probably not - but they didn't so that is completely hypothetical and entirely irrelevant
The behaviour of the England fans has been exemplary.

Yes, we will.
Good job I'm not paranoid. Otherwise it would look very much like certain people were just waiting, hoping and praying that England fans riot in Japan so they can immediately claim that oh-so-smug moral high ground.
And that, of course, would be utterly hypocritical.

Right to clarify a few points.
I first and foremostly support Scotland.
I also like to see any nations playing any sport against England do well. This does not mean I support the other nations it means I want to see England get beaten. If this is construed as having a chip on my shoulder the so be it and I will carry it proudly.
Oh so smug moral high ground(not a phrase I would use) if this is a reference to the pride that the TA has in its reputation then I am so proud to be associated with the Tartan Army.
Anytime someone cannot emulate anything it is derided, mocked or treated as something that does not matter.
Corkie made a very valid point about the hooligan element not being present and we are all glad about that. He nor anyone else on this board has been waiting, hoping or praying for violence to erupt.

I find that very, very difficult to believe blackearnside, but maybe I am just being paranoid. Corkie's point was possibly valid but - as I said - entirely hypothetical. JimFaeKdy's 'point' was unnecessary and pretty pathetic.
We surely don't want to drag up the old "Why I support England's opponents" argument, but the point I was making was that there is a clear distinction between choosing England as your second team to support and choosing any country playing AGAINST England.

CUFC, we like to support teams that play good football, not just hoof it up the pitch hoping that a 4 foot tall welshman can score a few or failing that fall over his own feet in the penalty box!

I'm a lot more convinced by blackearnside's answer than yours Will!
Anyway, I must have said a million times that I would not expect anything else other than for Scots to want us to lose - perfectly natural given the footballing rivalry between the two countries!
As for us not playing good football - well I'd be more inclined to take that comment seriously if it were coming from a 'neutral'. As it is, I'll just have to assume you missed the 17-pass move which culminated in Sheringham's volley being saved by Cavallero. Because otherwise it does look suspiciously like sour grapes.....

P.S. Jim - I apologise if you weren't implying that we are only a bad result away from a riot.
It is just pretty frustrating to see our fans behaving impeccably in a tournament and STILL not get any credit for it - what more do they have to do?

The Poet |
sorry if this is mising the point but i have read and seen numerus reports about the fans in the far east.Due to tickets not all being sold they are giving tickets away to local schools, government offices etc and telling the people to support one team because the other has more fans. One example that springs to mind is all the (500) Japanese fans that were given belguim tops and flags and tickets to support belguim against japan because there were not enough belgian fans there.
Is this not a case of supporting the team playing against another not because you like them but because of who they are playing??????????????????

I for one am quite pleased that there has not been any trouble with the enlish fans and the ones that are there should be congratulated.
Unfortunately, this is just one tournament on the other side of the world. There will have to be more occasions (perhaps nearer to home) before your fans can be given any credit for turning around the bad reputation you currently have.

CUFC,
Although I am supporting any team that plays England, I also support any team that plays against my clubs main rivals.
What I do get annoyed about is when the English complain about us supporting any team they are playing, but they sit and cheer any team Germany/Argentina and at this present time Italy are playing. Do you not think this is a bit hypocritical? I am not accusing you, I am just interested in your opinion.

I do know exactly what you mean, and I think the 'British' mentality is behind a lot of it, i.e. Germany are a completely foreign country but we (England/Scotland etc) are all (theoretically) part of the Union.
BTW, I should perhaps repeat that I do not expect Scots to support England.
The other factor is probably the extremes to which Scotland take their 'support' of England's opponents. I have nothing against Germany but do quite like to see them lose - however I would never buy the shirt of a country they were playing, or plan a trip to the pub to watch the Germany match to support Germany's opponents as if it were a game involving my own team (I'm not saying this is universal but it seems to be pretty widespread!).
P.S. I am supporting Italy - got money on it!
