Opinionated Wind Bag |
Photos are two dimensional, (admittedly one more dimension than the media). When you see it side on there was a gap between Owen and the Argentinian who actually pulls his leg back out of the way. There was zero contact. Owen dived again, and it would have been "Cheating Argies" headlines everywhere if it was the other way. Deny that if you can.
England played OK, I wasn't too bothered either way before the tournament but one dose of BBC this morning sums up why we want you to get stuffed.
Lineker " welcome to the show - don't you think the world is a better place today" then "Italy- England final doesn't look out of the question as the Italians look allright at the moment". Over to commentators for Italy-Croatia, First words " And an Englishman features here today - the referee" . Italian goal disallowed in error - " That is no reflection on English referee Graeme Poll - it was his linesman" etc etc. Half time - OK that was a crap game let's watch England again. Hypocritically glossing over then airbrushing out the Owen dive from history. Never mind Jonny Vaughan last night crossing live to the Falklands.
This is a generalisation no doubt, but at times like this it seems like the English (esp media) are overjoyed because they get the chance to uncork the superiority complex they have to keep bottled up most of the time. That is why I sincerely hope that cork get's shoved right up Lineker's arse in the next game.

Lets hope the Owen dive finally stops them bleating on about the Hand of God, 1-1 in my book now.
As for the BBC, is it possible we can ban Hansen from ever setting foot in this country ever again? the total tosspot selling himself for English gold......

It wasn't a dive.
Try and find some Argentinian boards - none of them think it was a dive, and they were the ones we actually played.
footsoldier - we have just beaten Argentina, arguably our biggest footballing rivals and the team who have knocked us out of 2 of the last 3 World Cups, a team who are deserved favourites for the tournament and against whom we were given absolutely no chance by 99% of the population. Is it then so hard to stomach that it gets plenty of attention devoted to it?

99% of the English population (or at least 99% of the people I spoke to) - probably 100% of the Scots?
Anyway, we'll probably lose to Nigeria and then it'll all come back.

Footsoldier excellent post.
You summed up what most of us feel like today.
What makes me laugh is the way the self righteous pontificating fannybaws english media and commentators went to town about Ronaldinho's antics calling him chaet and accusing him of bringing the game into disrepute as I accidently on purpose leave the room every time yesterdays game is mentioned has there been one tiny wee mention from anyone about the cheating nature of England's win??????????
No didn't think so! .... and so you see CUFC that is the reason why most Scots have this dislike towards the english and their media in particular.
A wee fact for you CUFC most people I know actually like and admire many of the English players and wish that we could have some of them playing for us. What we dont like however is the double standards within the english media and the smug superiority attitude.

I accept that totally and can see why it pîsses you off. As has been said before, please do not assume that the whole of England is sitting there applauding Tyldesley when he comes out with some biased piece of rubbish. Often we pîss ouselves laughing at the ignorance of our commentators, but we just find them ill-informed and amusing rather than the menaces to society that they often are portrayed as (or demonised) on here.
So - was it a penalty? Or does the fact that you (collective 'you'!) hate our media mean you can't accept that we won fair and square?

Indeed Ruary and footsoldier. No matter what England players do the commentators will NEVER admit that they cheat. If there is an incident of a "possible" cheating nature they call it "professionalism" or they (as Mr Hanson did this morning) say well the "continentals" have been doing it for years as a justification.
As footsoldier says this angle and a static photo does not show the full picture. Funnily enough they stated that this was the best angle to see it on TV today. I would dispute that there was another angle which clearly showed the gap.
I accept that the Argentinian player made a huge mistake sticking his leg out and many players would have exploited it in the same way as Mr Owen. All I ask is that the commentators acknowledge that English players do cheat and stop taking the moral high ground and blaming cheats from other countries for Englands previous failings.
All we want is consistency.
And yes footsoldier the punditry just got 1m times worse...

I guess we'll really have to agree to disgree then
The way I see it, Owen was fouled, there was contact and Collina (who had a completely unobstructed view) gave the penalty immediately.
If he had been outside the box, it would still have been a foul.
NO Argentinian has complained about it - significantly, I think.
And the very first question put to Michael Owen after the game was:
"Michael, the penalty - just the faintest of touches?"
Now if that isn't putting him on the spot without asking him outright if he dived, then I don't know what is.
The reason no pundits or commentators seriously questioned it or accused him of cheating is because HE DIDN'T CHEAT AND IT WAS A PENALTY.
It really is as simple as that - and any suggestion otherwise really does smack of sour grapes and clutching at straws.

Get a grip. Owen is well known internationally, and maybe more importantly, domestically as somebody who throws himself to the ground at each and every opportunity. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's booed by opposition fans in England and chants of 'cheat, cheat', follow him around the premiership grounds.
Are these are the same fans who will be applauding him for his 'professionalism' after yesterday ?
Hypocrites, the lot of you.

Rossy - I have never booed Owen for diving and I don't think he dived yesterday.
Nobody else - not even the Argentinians, who let us not forget are supposedly the injured party on whose behalf the Scots are valiantly conducting an "Owen is a cheat" campaign - thinks it was a dive.
You guys are the only ones who think it was - the Argentinians don't. More importantly, Pierluigi Collina didn't - and he is the only one whose opinion really counts

CUFC - I can't remember if you're a Carlisle or Colchester fan (think it's the former), but I'm sure you would kill to have the chance to boo Owen !
Anyways, it's over and done with now. I've nothing against you, and freely admit that England deserved their victory.....I know it's difficult for you, as you look upon things differently, but you have to understand what patronising, arrogant, triumphalist, swaggering drivel we are going to have to put up with until England or out.
How would you fancy being subjected to 'Bild' and German television everyday during the world cup ? That's how it feels for us.
P.S. Apparently 'the Star' carried the headline 'gotcha !!!' this morning...is that true ?
Bad taste in journalism hits yet another low....

Something to say |
In a German newspaper today king of the divers ex-German international striker Karl Heinz Rumenigge says Owen dived and he watched it on the telly. Now I am not sure if he dived or not but if an expert like on diving like Rumenigge thinks Owen that is a strong indication that he did.
Fair enough E*****d deserved to win but be honest CUFC there is no way on Earth you can convince me that Argentina are the best team in the world certainly not on that performance.
Also the reason that Scottish people get so pissed off with all the media and supporters of E*****d is that every other country in the world apart from E*****d have cheating footballers.
Think back to 1998 which we have heard a lot about on the telly etc in the past week.Beckham kicks Simeone and according to Englishmen everywhere Simeone is a cheat.I cant work that one out can you CUFC?
Also why are the English such hypocrites. After the Sweden match E*****d fans in papers,in e-mails on the TV and in the street are saying they are rubbish etc. After one win all of a sudden they are on the national news saying they are going to win the World Cup and some of these complete arseholes even say they are DEFENITely going to win it.What utter BULLS**T the E*****h fans talk.Dont let any E*****hmen tell you any differently i live doon here in Coventry so I know their reaction.
I am Scottish I talk sense and still say E*****d will not be winning the World Cup.Sorry I will change that to I KNOW THEY WON'T win it.

Well in 1994 we had a foreign team (the Irish) rammed down our throats for a month, and in 1978 it was your glorious team. It does work the other way, but England = more viewers so regrettably the shit-fot-brains TV presenters and commentators up the bias stakes even more when we're playing.
I suspect most English people find Davies, Motson, Tyldesley and Lineker as embarrassing as you do - as far as I am concerned their lack of professionalism tarnishes the experience. But it's not just the English, I'm afraid - Lynam, Lawrenson, Hansen, Earle, Hasselbaink, Yorath, McCoist, Townsend, O'Leary, O'Neill and Wilson are all at it too. The memory is dim now but as I recall they went just as silly over scotland in 1998 and Ireland in 1990 and 1994. I
Actually Wilson's a top man. Let him be stricken from the list of shame.
We do have good commentators too - Peter Brackley, Guy Mowbray, Stuart Wilson, Joe Royle, Gary Bloom and Graham Taylor all seem to be unbiased and genuinely interested in the game in front og them rather than Keegan's header against Spain in 1982 or Nobby dancing down the touchline. They just have a lower profile than the bloated old duffers who get the big games. In any case I don't listen to them - there's too much good music out there to waste time listening to someone describing something you can see with your own eyes so I tend to whack something appropriate on the stereo and turn the sound on the tv down. But that's just me I spose.

Whether is was or whether it wasn't a dive the fact remains the commentators accuse many other nations of diving at every opportunity and never accuse English players of doing such a terrible thing when in fact they do. THAT is what pisses me off.
I would love to know what the verdict would have been if the roles had been reversed.
And yes Rossy, Owen in no stranger to taking a tumble.
