GET A LIFE!!!

Whats with this congratulations stuff, lots of countries have won games and we don't congratulate them.
I didn't see any of the game that is being discussed and I wish I was able to say I couldn't care but I do,not to the point of the "mentalist" Battlebus commander but some folk are like that, one of my mates was saying he couldn't manage his pint when the game was on he was so nervous about the result and talking to him this morning you would have thought it was the end of the world. So no congratulations from me .

Well Jacobite, when you say 'I wish I was able to say I couldn't care but I do', you kind of answer your first question really.

Are there any other teams in this world cup whose results you really CARE about??

Nigeria's.

Kernie,  England are our rivals anyway, but that is then compounded by the media who are unavoidable.  You can't deny that in Sport at least we are separate countries, so we are basically force fed biased foreign coverage from our biggest rivals.

The pro-english effect is actively spoiling the World Cup for us.  We don't get highlights of other games, analysis is cut short to let more gloating take place etc.

example today Shay Given live from the Irish camp.  first question: "Shay, what do you think about England?"

Translation
"Enough about us, let's talk about you.  What do you think about us"

We don't want this, we have no choice on the matter.  It will stop (decrease anyway) when you go out therefore we want you out.  We have no need to apologise, inspect our navels, wonder about the chips on our shoulders.  If anyone feels differently then fine, but I reserve the right to cheer on Nigeria Wednesday morning and talk about it here if I want to.

WW:
"Why is it that so many people feel obliged to congratulate England?"

Dont feel obliged at all. Just think they deserved it. Nothing more nothing less. Argentina were utter mince. Fair enough it was a dive but over the 90 minutes, England done enough to win the game. As much as Im dying for them to take a pasting and be on the next plane home, Im big enough to accept and acknowledge when they were the better of two bad teams. Its embarassing when people cant even being realistic and rational. This isnt rivalry, its verging on hatred.

While Im congratulating the players on their 3 points, the media are being utterly unbearable. I cant stand it much longer and had to turn off TV this morning to get away from it.

Anyways, that games out the way. Heres hoping Nigeria still go out to prove a point. I wanted them to go out ina  penalty shoot out but after watching some TV this morning, the sooner they're home the better.

footsoldier - It's all a bit sad though isn't it? - Watching a match and wanting one side to lose. Not that I'm too concerned about it - you're more to be pitied than censured.

Footsoldier sums it up,we rely on a foreign media to provide us with our news and sport,I don't blame them for how they report things as they are transmitting to an english audiance and couldn't care about how we in Scotland might react to not getting a full coverage of the World cup,our own fault really for  accepting it and instead of losing the nut at the coverage we should be asking how do we stop it happening and its simple we should have our own broadcasting companies. But until such time I will back whoever is playing england .

Maurice - actually watching a match and wanting one side to lose is what most sport is all about.  I've explained why - and if you're not that concerned why bother bringing it up?

I noticed that question to Shay Given too footsoldier. I thought that was appalling and downright rude particularly since it was the very first question he was asked. He did get his own back though by suggesting the England victory over Germany was a fluke result

MM so you have never wanted "one side to lose" Still think it is a bit strange that a supposed football fan doesn't comprehend rivalry. And the only sad thing here is you...

Am I missing something fundamental here but why would any Scot congratulate England on their victory.
Sure they deserved to win, as they were better than Argentina.
The cheating underhand way they achieved that win leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
All the "Argies are cynical, gamesmen who know how to cheat" crap in the build up certainly worked.
Owen took a dive plain and simple, his Actions were worse than Rivaldos. At least Rivaldos acting never influenced the game. Why was Beckham not yellow carded  when he conceded the foul for his elbowing. Simple the pre-match hype got to the official.

I watched the game in Edinburgh with in a pub with lots of English fans, There was Rivalry but no trouble.
I was in Manchester last weekend, I can't imagine the same relaxed but rivalous atmosphere if I had been in any of the pubs I visited with a Sweden top on.
This is where a lot of the animosity comes from the English fans in general have an attitude when watching football.
I too have been accused of being racist for being so anti-English. A point which really gets under my skin. I am not anti English I just want their sporting representative to get beaten at every sporting event in which they participate. What is wrong with that? Secondly when did being English become a race? I always thought it was a Nationality which people of any race could assume if the were born their. They are even too ignorant to acknowledge that.
As for the jokers dressed up in the crowd as St George nice costume, for a Turkish Roman Centurion famous for slaying imaginary beasts that never set foot in England.

footsoldier - I brought it up because I wasn't sure if you were aware what a life-negating attitude that is (and you're clearly not). No, there are no sides that I want to see lose just because of who they are. The idea of supporting a team, especially to the extent of wearing their replica shirt, just because of who their opponents happen to be is deeply sad - I just wasn't sure if you were aware of that.

Healthy rivalry's fine but unhealthy rivalry just gives you high blood pressure and I think a lot of the scottish-English rivaly is pretty unhealthy. It's not self-respecting rivalry.

For good or for ill I am a Manchester United fan and to beat Leeds or City or especially Liverpool is naturally the best, smuggest feeling you can get from a ball game but to be honest I don't want them to lose every match they play - I don't like seeing them win but I just don'r have that overdrive rivalry gear which makes them losing damn near as important as my team winning. And yes I have been known to support them in Europe. Just my anecdote but there are many club supporters who think the same and it's a tad insincere to compare the scotland-England rivalry with Any Other Club Rivalry. It's an ethnic thing. It's more Rangers-Celtic than  Telford-Kidderminster. :preparestohaveheadbittenoff:

Pud - And I suppose that you believe that St Andrew's remains really were brought ashore in Scotland. Every country has its myths.

The referee (or at least his assistants) missed a few things yesterday - Batistuta and Pochettino, in particular, were lucky to stay on the field.

1. You're talking as if we bribed the referee, the linesman, the groudsmanm the fans and God Almighty himself!! One marginal decision with which you happen to disagree does not a 'cheating, underhand' victory make.

2. How do you know the 'pre-match hype got to the official'?? Are you a mind-reader? Perhaps he did not book Beckham because he had let Batistuta off for a similar but worse offence and wanted to balance things up.

3. I am sure there would not have been the same 'relaxed, rivalrous atmosphere' if you had worn a Sweden top in an English pub last Sunday. You are kind of missing the point because I for one doubt there would be English people going into scottish pubs wearing the shirts of scotland's opponents. Some of wrong-headed English still have that crazy Corinthian notion of, er, supporting your own team and  not losing sleep over how well other teams do.

4. The English are not a race as you well know but our language lacks a suitable word to describe hatred based on ethnicity or nationality so we use 'racism' as a more-than-adequate stand-in. And it takes a bit more than being born in England to be English, as several of 'your' footballers and fellow scotland fans would attest. Dogs and stables and all that so please don't brand us all ignorant.

I want to point out that you could not pick up a paper in the run-up to the England v Argentina game with yet another Argie bringing up the subject of the Falklands War, while England's players wisely steered clear of the subject. After all, it was Britain v Argentina in the Falklands, not England. You Scots understandably get irate when England and Britain are used as interchangeable entities, but this is certainly once case where the roles have been reversed. That poor guy who got badly burned on the Sir Galahad is Welsh.

Not done so yet and not likely to MM as WW says "fresh ideas" is not really appropriate for u.

You should try taking a leaf out of Kernie or CUFC's book they appear to enjoy the banter in the main whereas all you do is mump and moan.
