Ridiculous amount of coverage given to El Thicko in todays paper.On page 3 (thought they didn't put tits on page 3) very large pic of him surrounded by nurses and story about him being the only player to receive such treatment.Sorry Lachlan McKinnon but you are wrong.From what I saw on t.v.,Ronaldo was given the same treatment and all other players were given 'the good luck charms.
Then in the sports pages a full page report on the game.
The opening paragraph went
Ian Gilmour reports from Beijing
"David Beckham looks like being the new kingpin of Real Madrids midfield after his solid debut in a four-goal Chinese romp"
The report went on to say such things as "impressive start","sprayed the ball around well",and "a performance that promises much for the future".
Gilmours' report focuses entirely on Beckham,so much that the 4 goals were almost an after-thought.However in a small box with the headline "Busy Becks is engine driver",there is a move-by-move account of all his involvement and that tells the real story.In all he had 7 touches of the ball,2 free-kicks,3 passes,1 cross and 1 pass in a 'neat triangle'."Impressive start"- doesnt look like it"sprayed the ball around well- yes three times,"a performance that promises well for the future" and " new king-pin" - how can anyone deduce that from the statistics.Especially as he didn't contribute to any of the goals
But what I really want to know is why did a Scottish newspaper send one of their top journos to China to cover an Englishman playing for a Spanish team?

Yesterday's coverage of the Real Madrid v Chinese Dragons game on ITV2 featuring stars such as Ronaldo, ZZ, Raul, Figo, Bob Carlos etc was simply entitled "Beckham" !

I in a very strange sort of way will admit to liking the man he is a fantastic footballer some of his free kicks are mouth watering but the red mist come's when he wears the three lions of England.
he also is more intellegant than you think how much money does he get from football compared to self global marketing good on the guy!
to be honest the Real Madrid games wouldn't be on if it wasn't for Becks!

Yeah - 'Nuff said' indeed. By implying that Real Madrid somehow suffered a 3-goal deficit by having Beckham on the pitch you have managed to show that you're a bit of a thicko and don't really need to say any more.

I dont rate Beckham as dont think he can do much with ball apart from cross he can't take on players which is kinda bad for a midfielder.
Something to think about lets just say all the "experts" who are coming out saying Real are wrong for signing Beckham are right he gets exposed as ordinary and is transfer listed at Real or is put in Reserves how much do you reckon Beckham will go for & who would take him. None of Europes big guns would take him due to failing at Real which leaves the option of moving back to England.

A good list, Craig Smith but also just about entirely fictitious. Of the four people you've listed only one (George Best) has actually disparaged Beckham's footballing ability - and he's just an alcohol-sodden, embittered old pro. Of the other three that you list, Maradona has spoken out against the Beckham marketing machine but not his footballing abilities and both Pele and Beckenbauer, far from being insulting, have actually spoken incredibly highly of Beckham's skills.
Thus Franz Beckenbauer on Beckham: Beckenbauer rates Beckham - "David Beckham is a wonderful player - one of the best in the world". and further: Beckham - "Best in World" - "Coming from a German, this is going to sound a little controversial, but my vote for the world's best footballer, if I had one, would go to Beckham."
And Pele: Pele on Beckham - "I love the way Beckham plays. He is very organised and has great vision on the field. In modern football there are very few players like this. If I were a coach I would always want him in my team. I would rate Beckham in my top four alongside Zinedine Zidane, Raul and Luis Figo."
So, far from being anti-Beckham, both Beckenbauer and Pele actually rate him as one of the best in the world. Sorry, Craig Smith but you are clearly a LIAR and a fraud.

Good point Kernaghan. Why blow the bank and overpay on one player? If I could, I'd have Maloney AND McFadden on my team before Beckam. Two great players who will increase in value at a fraction of the cost! What a deal!

Ah good to see you back again Mr Mann with your very positive input to proceedings. Now you have really topped yourself - coming from a person like yourself I think it is a bit much calling anybody a "liar and a fraud".
With regard to Mr Beckham, the only way to judge him is at the end of his first season with Real Madrid, then everybody will be in a position to see how good/bad the lad actually is. I mean if you were to base it on his performance in the English Premiership for Man Utd over the last two years he has not exactly set the world alight, now has he.
Very interesting points from the Man Utd CEO in the papers the last few days about Mr Beckham - basically staing that he has not been missed and in fact, it was the most relaxed Man Utd training camp he can remember as the Beckham circus was not around. He also mentioned about Mr Beckhams little trip to USA during the summer where according to the English tabloids, he was the talk of town. Kenyon mentions that Beckhams trip made none or little impact over there - seems to me one massive ego boosting trip for him and his missus.

I would rather have a midfielder who could spray passes around, than one going on mazey runs and losing the ball leaving the opposition an easy route to goal.

Beckham's a very good player but he's nowhere near the Zidane, Raul league. And neithr is Figo for that matter.
Anyone who looks at the Madrid side knows that Beckham is not guaranteed in the starting line up but is probably likely to hold down the right mid spot for a while anyway.
I don't even think he's the best England player. England's best palyer is Owen and then Scholes b4 Beckham IMO.
But he's married to a popstar and he's a celebrity and they are a beautiful couple etc so how his life progresses is of interest beyond his footballing skills. Hence we're having this conversation when we never have about MacManaman or any other Ingerlander for that matter...
Personally couldn't care less about how newspapers report it particularly north-Br*t rags like the Sunday Mail.
