Something to say

As I already stated, I really think that it would be a great honour for the Tartan Army to show their respects to Ally MacLeod. Ally is ill with Alzheimers Disease and yes, while those of us old enough will have mixed memories of the 1977 to 1978 period when he was in charge, it is fair to say that it was a great time to be a Scotland fan. This was due to his enthusiasm which rubbed off onto the fans, and ok maybe our expectations got a bit too high, but I for one know that I will never forget that period, when we really thought we were the best.
I reckon we could certainly do with a wee touch of the arrogance and confidence that our side had at that time, things have never really been quite the same since for our side.

A78 agree wholeheartedly we do need something to raise our spirits and our profile , to many years in the doldrums and like you say good idea bring back the feelgood factor of past "glories" and pay respect to some of our yet to be honoured players

I feel that players from the past who wore the dark blue with honour and added credability tae Scottish football should be added tae the hall of fame on merit and not just on accumalation of caps

HR I quite agree with you on this point. I think that meritous performances rather that amount of caps should ge considered when you see that many of the so called Greats of Scottish football, Baxter, Mackay,Jinkky Johnstone, Greig, Archie Gemmill and McNeil dont feature at all.

Fresh ideas

Given the condition of Ally I suspect for health reasons alone it would be difficult to attend although I agree he should be recognised in someway.
Reflecting back to the 60's and early 70's that is when I recall there being true spirit in a player who wore the jersey. For the Germany game why do we not invite Tommy Gemmell and on the big screen just before the 'dirge' replay that bit of the Germany game when big Tam was sent off having given the German a good kick up the a..e.We could also invite Tam ' he's got jaws..he's got Keegan by the ba..s da da da da da da da da da...and of course 'in memorium' we could also sing 6 foot 2 eyes of blue big Jim Holton's after you da da da da da da da da da da.Why not also invite John Greig Kenny Burns, Graame Souness Gordon McQueen and Colin Hendry. That would be enough to get anyone going............although is it pure dead coincidence that the dumbing down of our football hierarchy from Ormond, Docherty and McLeod to name three to Roxburgh Brown and Vogts could also have an influence upon the 'dirges' that flow from a less than adequate stadium such as Doh A Deer, Flipper the bush kangaroo and Skippy the Dolphin?  Sorry I am not sure if I can mention bush?

For you young guys
when Jimmy Johnstone won His Caps,
Wullie Henderson was also strutting his stuff ,
as were so many players of the time t
here was compitition for places
less games being played
most games being annual home internationals
therefor the opportunity wasn't there for these players, I feel that the S.F.A. should look at these players and make them honoury members of hall of fame.
After all they were truly great SCottish players.
There are also greats from further back in the tears.

GET A LIFE!!!

Lets not forget that in the 50's and 60's and to some extent in the 70's Scotland was a production line for great footballers. Many went south to earn their crust. The likes of St John, Alex Young, Denis Law, John White, and many more all strutted their stuff in the English 1st Division. Sadly for them and for Scotland's chase for honours there was a policy in the SFA not to pick "Anglo's" which meant many of these players who would have walked into the team were overlooked for homebased players.
Oh for some of that talent now.

It seems incredible now, but as HR says there was great competition for places in the 60s. I have a programme from the 1969 England v Scotland Home International at Wembley, Scotland had the following wingers listed in the squad, Jimmy Johnstone,Charlie Cooke, Eddie Gray, Willie Henderson, Tommy McLean, add to that the talents of Peter Lorimer,John Hughes, Bobby Lennox, Willie Morgan and Willie Johnston and you can see what aselection. Wouldn't it be great to have any of these players available for selection these days, and they are only wingers and there are probably a few I have missed out.

Not old enough to remember myself, but I have heard on good authority that Johnstone was lucky to get the amount of caps that he did because he never re-produced the same form in the dark blue as he did for his club (probably similar to the first 70+ caps that Dalgliesh got then!).  So, the Hall of fame is definitely not for him!!!

Fair enough. We're all entitled to out own opinion I guess!!

I agree that Johnstone was one of the best wingers that Scottish football has ever prodced (judging his performances in the hoops), but I have dozens of tapes of old Scotland games, and I have yet to finfd one of him giving a great performance inthe dark blue... can you point me in the right direction...??? As I said, I was born in '70 and can't recall him playing myself, but my Da said he was great for the 'tic, but pish for Scotland - please correst me!!!

You had it on good authority earlier min.

Now you have seen him first hand (or as good as)

Then you are back to your dad says.

It is true that the majority of players don't look as good in an international jersey.

The reason, instead of playing against an average diddy, you are up against another international.

How many goals has Larson scored for Celtic.  And how many for Sweden.

Comprende

Min, take a look back at the records of the Home International match Scotland v England at Hampden, just prior to the World Cup in 1974. You will read that Jimmy Jinky Johnstone, tormented the English defence that day, all the press confirm this. He was a genuine World Class winger, probably(IMO) the best winger Scotland ever had. He was on top form at this time and it seemed strange that the then Scotland boss Willie Ormond decided against playing hime in the World cup a few weeks later. Any TAMBERS know the reason for this?

Good shout A78, I'll take a look at the '74 game. I am actually willing to be convinced, just haven't seen anything to confirm this yet.

GTS I have heard a few opinions from different people about JJ's games in the dark blue, but like most people under 35 (I take it that you are over 40, given your superior knoledge of the said performances?!?), I can only judge by what I have heard and seen on video.
