Sorry WHJH, that sort of thinking went out in the Ice Age, look at where the Irish are now? it hasn't done them any harm. Where would you rather be, not qualifying for tournaments and cast adrift in world football, or using ALL available resources and playing in World Cups? I know what I would rather choose.

I know what you are trying to say and I would agree to limit the qualifying criteria to parentage and not grandparents, but those are the rules so we should use them to our maximum benefit. There aren't many young Scottish players better than Hutchison/Devlin/Dobie etc at the moment, in a few years maybe.

Beggars cannot be choosers.

So if you were good enough (you may well be) and eligible (you probably aren't) to play for Brazil, and they wanted to call you up you wouldn't go?

Come on.

This is all hypothetical I know but ability does come into it I'm afraid.

would i play for brazil? no chance. had this conversation a million times with an old flatmate (usually after talking about ryan giggs). would u rather play for a scotland team that got nowhere or an england team that won the world cup.

i'm sure you all have the correct answer to that one

I didn't mean it like that, of course Scotland would be no 1 for everybody, but WHJH said he wouldn't play for anybody except Scotland. All I'm saying is, and I know this will never happen, what if Scotland din't want him but Brazil did and he qualified for them. His views are old-fashioned as the previous post says

Of course it wont do them any harm they can pick Irish palyers or anybody with irish connections which includes a hell of a lot of people all over the world. I would rather watch us struggle than watch a team ful of foreigners. The teams berti has put put lately have mostly been Scottish and they have done alright. Not a very good incentive for young scottish players if players are being picked from other countries in there poistion.

2003 is a big year for us

Sully will either get back in to Spurs and prove himself worthy OR Douglas (who will have a job keeping out Hedman)

I look at Sullys perfomances for Scotland overall and hes up there with Goram even Jim Leighton!

Good to see the guy come back from injury but i dont think Hutchinson and Devlin should be playing for Scotland. Dont like to see players playing for our national side that arent Scottish. Should we not be playing the promising Scottish players rather than picking people who  qualify to play for us. Not got a problem with it if they have grew up in this country but born in another, but for players to play for us who have had no interest in Scotland until they have a chance of playing international football usually because they have no chance of getting a game with there own country is wrong i think.

That's not entirely fair.  I was born and brought up in Luton, and even though I have that scar on my life, I have no eligience (is that how you spell it) to England, and I would'nt even p*ss on the flag if it was on fire.

I have a constant battle at work each and every night , with people saying "how can you support Scotland, you was'nt even born there", but I think the place of birth of your father (Mine was born in Inverkeithing) and your heritage should ALWAYS come before your place of birth.  I hate being labelled ENGL*SH, and I hate the way the engl*sh think it is their god given right to win everything (did you see that world cup program on BBC1 last night about Englands 2002 journey-w*nkers) so just because they might not of been born in Scotland, does'nt mean Hutch and co show any less passion when they put on the blue shirt, or be any less patriotic.

I might of not been brought up in Scotland, but I was brought up as a Scot.  As my old man said to me a week ago "If I was born in China, It doen't make me a Chinaman".

If you read my previous posts you will see that i have said that i dont have a problem with people playing who were not born here as long as they consider themselves Scottish and actually take an intrest in the country. Richard Gough for example was not Scottish but i never had a problem with that, but these days we have players like Matt Elliot playing for us who are definetly not Scottish or have  not adopted the country as there homeland until they sense a chance of international football. Yer no trying to tell me some of these guys never supported England when they they were younger.

My Apologies WHJH.  I'm only 23, but have been supporting Scotland all my life, and consider myself fully Scottish.  You do have a valid point about the ones who basically only become 'Scottish' when they get a sniff at getting international football, but as was said in another post beggars can't be choosers, but at least its a rule in Scottish football you can only qualify through Parentage or Grand Parentage, unlike Ireland where you qualify by 1. Flying over Ireland going to America on your hols., 2. Drinking Guiness or 3. Admitting you like U2, (can you really imagine Clinton Morrison doing the Irish jig on St Patrick's Day).

Do we really benfit from this rule? We are only a small country so will have less connections. The French won the world cup with a team almost complete of non french players. If we can do it so can everyone else the only teams who are likely to benfit are the bigger nations.

you think Morrisons bad during the Ipswich Barsley Play off Matt Holland (Eire's vice captin) Sung his heart to god save the queen

WEHATEJIMMYHILL; Yeh im sure you were well down when Matt Elliott SCORED for us against San Marino

took what 73mins the match even though it was away it was like home game for us as there was 3000 scots against San Marino 100 fans
........................................................................................

Even Italy want an Argenine that plays for Juve to play for them!

We have benifted and we will benifit from this rule in the future!

so we have Itlay, Brazil, Japan, Ireland, England, France playing players that born elsewhere the fans dont mind

During the world cup my pals would be happy to of Seen Hargreves score the winner in the final!

(they wouldnt care who scored!)
