Think we could apply to FIFA to only have to qualify from a group containing:
The Faroes
St Kilda &
Rockall
and then get straight into the World Cup finals? Or is this the Aussies payoff for supporting Blatter?

Depends upon the qualifying group structure.
The only nation in Oceania capable of beating Australia is New Zealand & 9 times out 10 Australia would win.
Certainly the last time they had two groups with a play-off between, guess who, Australia and New Zealand, which Australia won comfortably. However, in a play off you never know and Australia have certainly proved themselves to be bottle merchants on the big occasion is the past.
I'll certainly be laughing my cock off if NZ qualify ahaed of them.

Its an absolute nonesense that Oceania get a direct qualifying spot, how many votes or backhanders did Blatter get for keeping that wee promise? Asia and Oceania Confederations should have been merged or re-organised as the Asian Region is far too big and Oceania (in footbaling terms) is too small.
It virtually guarantees Australia (who are ranked 50th in the World) a Finals spot whilst the Holders will now need to qualify - ludicrous!

I was pretty glad the Aussies never made the world cup, No disrespect to any australians on here or people who have aussie family but they acted so ***** ly and cocky over their 1-0 win over Uruguay in that First Leg playoff win and that bugger Muscat scored too.
I Remember them all saying yeah we'll make the quarters of the world cup and they got pashed on in Montevido, I was delighted...
nothing personal against the australians but their attitude towards sport is somewhat similar to the yanks.

It's a disgrace that the Aussies are now guaranteed a spot. It begs the question what have they done for football to deserve the spot? I am not saying football should'nt spread the game but Europe is the power base of football, we create all the revenue only to have to fight out for limited placers in a WC. And to think, that piece of shite Blatter resides in his ivory tower controlling the game at his whim, an unelected dictator! Can't the EU or governments move him out unceremoniously? literally wade in and tell him to F*** OFF?! makes my blood boil, this is all shafting the European nations whilst helping the Aussies and keeping Blatter in power! Very cosy.......................

I am delighted the Oceania region has been given an automatic spot the world cup should represent a spot for all areas of the world
Most Australians dont like football and prefer Aussie rules I think this could have an affect on them
Australia is without a doubt the best country I have visited (twice)
you never know NZ may make it!

Dont agree with OFC getting an automatic place as even if NZ do give australia a run for their money its still essentially only a two team qualifying campaign. Oceania should be merged with the AFC anyway seeing as their is no such continent!

another problem this throws up is :-
Europe now has only 13 qualifying places + Germany the hosts
so
how do you think they will structure the qualifying groups ?
51 teams to participate
12 groups of 4 + 1 of 3 = 13 group winners who qualify
or
9 groups of 5 +1 group of 6 = 10 group winners then the best 3 runners-up
quite confusing

From what I read, there will be 8 groups - winners +best two runners up qualify automatically. Other 6 runners up play-off for 3 spots. But that means 5 groups of 6 and 3 of 7 if correct.

Of course it is. They'll qualify for the next 4 world cups at least now.
Apparently the qualifying procedure is being completely revamped ahead of 2010, so Oceania's easy ride is probably only for 2006.
* Update: Just seen Sepp Blatter, who in the past repeatedly insisted the 2010 World Cup will be in Africa, on Sky News talking about how Fifa are interested in staging it in South America instead. Sort it out Sepp!

WOnder if UEFA will use this as a way of introducing pre-qualification ? i.e telling the Faores Luxembourg Anodrra etc to play off against one another to get into the main event - not a bad idea really.
However getting to 13 teams is going to be tricky no matter how many teams you start out with and will almost certainly lead to a re-introduction of the x best 2nd place teams go straight through - either that or multiple rounds of play offs.
They could have 10 groups and just put the best 3 runners up through and scrap play offs altogether, or mebbe have 9 groups and have the two worst runners up play off to get INTO the play offs - calculators out again I think

Sorry tommyt I cannot agree that pre-qualification is a good thing. I do not want to end up with another cr@ppy equivilent of the Champions League ta very much.
Never mind the fact that we may end up pre-qualifying!
