Good point Winky.  I know the SFA wouldn't be childish enough to bring it up but I hope UEFA notice it.

aye, and added to that, there was the hand grenade explosion in a disco in Linz.

now before this is taken the wrong way, I don`t mention this so as to gloat, but it`s just the irony of it all, after they said it was a safer country to go to than Scotland or Ireland

I think the message for the Austrians is "Leute in den Glashäusern sollten nicht Steine werfen". It could also be pointed out that when Austria played Israel in Euro 2000 qualifying there were dozens of swastikas in the crowd...

Sorry, I just cannae see this having the slightest effect on their bid, same
as a few idiots at Aberdeen-Rangers shouldn't have had any effect on ours.
Careful bringing up the swastika thing as well...as reprehensible as it is, the Austrians/Swiss could turn round and say that our game and society is filled with religious bigotry and intolerance.
Not trying to put the downers on anything, just trying to point out that
IMHO, these isolated incidents won't matter a jot to the final decision of UEFA.

I think the difference, Rossy, is that the Aberdeen-Rangers thing happened quite a while ago now and therefore is unlikely to be uppermost in the minds of the UEFA panel. This incident, coming just a couple of weeks after the bids were submitted, is more likely to cast doubt into their minds, especially after the Austrians mentioned that they wouldn't have security issues.

Bear in mind, too, that the Scottish and Irish bid has the exemplary behaviour of both sets of fans at numerous World Cups and European Championships to point to - whereas Switzerland and Austria haven't qualified as often and therefore their fans have not had the same opportunity to put on a good show - meaning that this incident will be what will stand out.

I don't think it will be a huge factor, but I'm sure it will have been noted and will maybe sway a vote or two in our direction.

I've changed my mind now,  I don't think it will have a great effect on the vote at all.  If anything as long as we keep behaving ourselves we will continue to shine.  (No offence meant Kernie and CUFC,  I'm not trying to start an arguement just trying to point out a few facts at the time)  UEFA gave England the competition in 96 regardless of the behaviour of the fans at the time.  Our good behaviour will get us a few votes but I think what happened at the game the other day will be ignored or seen as aone off.::

I think the commitee will look more at stadiums, transport, accomodation etc which unfortunately for us Switzerland/Austria have good facilities.

That's a bloody good point DesertJock, presumably the decision to give us Euro 96 was made between 1990-2 at a time when our fans were not exactly distinguishing themselves - mind you, they weren't at their worst either.

We also had Lansdowne Rd in 1995 to damage our chances although the decision had been made by then.

Unfortunately I think money played a large part and UEFA knew that TV revenue would be huge if the event was in England - perhaps the same financial guarantees don't apply to a Scotland/Ireland bid? But then again maybe they don't apply to Switzerland/Austria either so who knows............?

My only point about this story would be that since it was the Swiss/Austrian party who first mentioned the hooligan issue that they must now have very red faces perhaps now they will keep their snidey comments to themselves and let the bids do their talking.

CUFC - not sure that the TV cash is affected by where the tournament is played.  Did the BBC/ITV pay more because it was in England compared to what they paid when it was in Sweden or Holland/Belgium?  Can see why they would pay less for a WC in somewhere like Japan where times of games are inconcenient but not for a EC.

I think where the English bid scored a lot of points (and hopefully the Scottish/Irish one will as well) is in the number of people that can fit into the stadia.  Our bid would have an extra 500k seats available which at say £30 a pop is £15m of extra income.

Yeap...the timing of this incident is a bit of a beamer for those who brought up any connections betwee the Scots/Irish bid and hooliganism.
These incidents should be seen for what they are...isolated and one-offs. Call me cynical but I reckon that (as in any EUFA/FIFA decision), the choice has already been made in the minds of those who count. You'll get a couple of delegates who MAY still be open minded and whose point of view can be swayed by an inspection visit, but I think the majority will have all ready made a decision based on a variety of reasons (political, financial, holiday house in the alps etc etc). I really hope I'm wrong as I feel we're still that vote or 2 behind ....

Jaggy, you're probably right about the TV revenue. But - as you say - there would be more money from ticket sales and certainly more money from merchandising if the tournament is staged in a 'football-mad' place like England as opposed to, say, Austria.

CUFC I am sure you made a mistake in your post i.e. a "football mad" place like England as opposed to Austria pardon me for pointing out the obvious but England are not submitting a bid and as for Football mad countries they dont come any more pasionate about the fotball than here in Scotland.
Of course you knew that already and just wanted to wind everyone up.

I was talking about reasons why we were given Euro 96 despite the hooligan problem at the time! Please accept my apologies - I certainly wasn't trying to imply that Scotland was any less 'football-mad' than England.

Fresh ideas

The Scotland/Ireland bid will be finished after tuesday night when Rangers Play Linfield. However planned this fixture needs his heads read .We think the Austrians are petty but we seem to be giving them more and more amunition to finish our bid.

Cool your boots,Regi.
There shouldn't be any trouble at all at the "Hun reunion".
It would be different if Rangers were away to,say, Cliftonville, but Linfield are loyalists.
Hardly likely to start fighting each other.
