GET A LIFE!!! |
When I was at Bannockburn today (never tire of that place ) I saw a couple of newspaper clippings about the 'Bannockburn 4', the guys/gals that nicked the saltire before France '98 and replaced it with a flag or something saying, 'Gone to France' and after the World Cup they returned it with the message 'merci' on another flag. And they've sent postcards to the museum saying they would return for WC2002. Did anyone ever find out who they were, anyone know them? Apparently it usually takes the staff 2 hours to take the saltire down and they would need special tools. Nice stunt.
Also, I saw a Bannockburn re-enactment advertised, sounds like it'd be good, the 31st August and 1st September, was anyone planning on going? There's also the Wallace day at Elderslie on the 24th August.

I'm assuming the Elderslie one is the village in Ayrshire and not the church in Glasgow or wherever. Was it ever confirmed whether he was born one place or the other?

WW,
Elderslie in not in Ayrshire, its in Renfrewshire on the outskirts of Paisley, and as far as I'm aware it was where you were born.
I just thought I'd helpfully point that out.

I'm just taking it from one of the biographies I read which says: "In Victorian times when Wallace's life came under great scrutiny, Elderslie was assumed to be the parish on the outskirts of Glasgow. Now some historians believe that his birthplace was near the seaside town of Ayr in south-west Scotland."
I also read something along the same lines in the Ayrshire and Arran tourist magazine or something, although I know that doesnae mean much because they'll claim anything to get tourists. It must still be debatable, I don't know if you could describe Paisley as the outskirts of Glasgow though.

Outskirts of Glasgow indeed. I hardly think that the biggest town in Scotland could be decribed as being a suburb of Glasgow.
I suppose geographically speaking I would have to concede somewhat reluctantly that it is tecnically "on the outskirts of Glasgow". Elderslie however is not, being on the outskirts of Paisley on the non Glasgow side, so to speak.
Anyway WW, I cannae prove anything to you other than Elderslie is most definitely in Renfrewshire and that they claim, not least on their village signposts, to be "The Birthplace of William Wallace".
Suppose it could be just Wullie Wallace who used tae tan the meths ootside the Paisley cross lavvies.

That's the point I was trying to make, that Paisley cannae be described as the outskirts of Glasgow because of the size of it, so the person who wrote the book has got it wrong somewhere along the line.
Anyway, I looked up the road atlas and you are completely correct, and there is no Elderslie to be seen in Ayrshire.

And it seems the William Wallace society accept it as being in the outskirts of Paisley and not Ayrshire because the march ot Elderslie starts in Johnstone. Maybe the author just got her Renfrewshires and Ayrshires mixed up.
