It reminds me of Davie Cooper's situation, he was never a great fan of the Scottish League or Scottish football infrastraucture and the fact that stamina and strength was always encouraged as opposed to real talent. But then he stuck with it and didnae want to go down south to the Premiership or anything. Probably another bad analogy/anecdote but never mind.

Oh no I am gonna have to agree with CUFC now..:helprequiredurgently:
I think the Stockdale's, Elliots' etc of this world are very similar to the Peter Nicol's. They want to play at international level and don't see themselves getting in the England squad.
Its maybe not for money directly gained from playing an international match but it may help their career development which in the long term may benefit them financially.

I agree with Lamia, I find it hard to buy that these 'Englishman with Scottish grannies' are playing because they love Scotland, you have to question their motives. I'm not saying that you should have to be 100% Scottish or anything like that, but a line has to be drawn somewhere.

That's disappointing craig but is that really anything to do with him being English?

Actually I agree to a point about Sven. He seems to have fallen into the time-honoured English tradition of sacrificing maverick talents for hard workers, picking defenders who can't use the ball and resorting to the long ball game when the going gets tough. Not all his fault of course, but I must say a lot of the early promise has ebbed. You know who I would have got in instead?
Venables.
Just so you know, we are capable of self-criticism lads
I'd have loved to have seen Venables back as well.
But I reckon Sven can't take too much stick for the failings of the players. Against Brazil we looked like we didn't have anything left in the tank - now maybe it should be Sven's job to motivate the players but what can he do if they just start panicking and humping the ball up the field as soon as they are faced with a determined defence?
As far as I'm concerned he has done an awesome job. Look where we were when he took over - bottom of our qualifying group with 1 point from 2 games - and then look how far he took us. A WC quarter-final which exceeded all pre-tournament expectations. And that was his first competitive loss. That is not a bad record, and one poor performance against Brazil should not disguise what he has achieved.

Craig - was the club 'Zanzibar'? I met him in there after the game and he was fine (apart from the terrible accent) chattin away - said he'd always wanted to play for Scotland since he wis a kid posed for the usual photos etc. Incidentally, John Leslie tried to get in the photos and he was promptly told to (in a friendly way, ofcourse) phack off!

Nah A think back tae grandparents is fine. Disnae bother me that some Englishmen play fir Scotland. As long as maist of the team are Scottish then dinnae worry aboot it. If the hail team wis English it wid be annoying but it isnae. Sullivan's done a decent job and may be an erse or no. A dinnae ken and A dinnae care.
Of course Stockdale etc wanted a game so they play fir Scotland. Ray Houghton played fir Ireland. Perhaps we should hae gien him the call.
It may have been there second choice when they were wee boys but I'm sure they play 100% and have immense pride in doing so. Their adults and professional fitba platers fir God's sake.

Getting back to the Peter Nichol thing (like I'm sure we all wanted to), I wonder about the associations that take people on in these kind of circumstances, I mean after someone's already represented another country.
The tempter for Nichol was that England Squash (formerly the SRA - obviously knew they were going to have to go incognito) would pay for his travel, physios, coaches etc. etc., as Footsoldier said.
But how can people like the SRA, which I've always found to be a strange, disorganised, and tricky organisation to deal with anyway, approach a competitor who already represents another country and invite him (or accept his suggestion) to play for THEIR country instead?
Is it the system that's immoral for allowing it, or the peopel involved in doing it? Answered my own question - it's both, isn't it?

Aye it has to be said, bad system or not, I read on Ceefax last night he'll be playing for England in Commonwealth games - on the podium with George Cross flying??? - There is no amount of money worth that.

Fresh ideas |
After reading his thoughts (in print) am no telepathic like. I can understand what he is doing. Maybe it should be the Scottish Squash mob who get a tirade from the public rather than this lad. How can it be justified that funding is available for foreigners to be bought in when we already have the world number one and all he is asking for is some of that funding for himself. Sounds to me that if funding was found the decision would be taken out of his hands, as in he would not need to consider a change of allegiance and he would keep flying the Saltire at international events.

It's a tough call to say he should stop short of achieving his ambition because the Scottish squash lot won't fund him properly. And if you were rejected in favour of a non-Scottish born/living Scot you wouldn't be too happy about it.
I agree with the above though.....I'd have gone to Singapore, playing for England is a step too far.

so whats funding then? somebody invented a new word?
No amount of money would be enough to make me stand under a StGeorges cross. I'd rather retire.

Interested to know how many of you who are critising Peter Nicol are happy to have the Stockdale's/Sullivan's in the Scotland squad?
