and again as someone you all know is constantly acused of 'over the top' scottish nationalism (are you watching snp), on a regular basis on this board ( and proud of it), i must temp defend peter nichol, who's story i heard over the bbc scotland airwaves, seemingly the guy has been pleading for the last 4 years for 'professional' status, from the scottish squash body...to no avail...which says more about the lack of scots support than anything..lets be honest, we do not always have the infastruture that supports a national player..too many here are just goddam..brits..shameful!!

I also have some sympathy with Peter Nicol although I feel I couldn't do what he has done maybe I would feel different given his circumstances.
Its not the same as playing interantional football where you can play for any team you want and your options are not curtailed by the country you play for. Your eanings and ability to reach your potential depends on the club you get to play for not your country. In squash etc the country you play for does determine your opportunities to develop and therefore your income. I know its probably not a great analogy but how many Scots have to move south to get a job/increse their opportunities and income.
You only have one shot in life and guys like this will not want to be looking back saying "if only" because their country couldn't meet their needs.
As I said I do not know how I would feel and my first reaction was "how could they do this"

Well I hate to be the odd one out but I wholeheartedly support both players. If I trained and achieved their level of ability and was let down by inept inward thinking twat administrators and Sprot Scotland then I would go where I could develop my career - because for Nicol it is certainly his career and we should be bending over backwards to support a true world number one!
By the way, anyone else out there work for an english company - traitors!!! You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Professionalism is a reality. Scottish inability to harness it's resources isn't something new. Let's put the blame where the blame is due, not on the players, but on the associations that remain time warped in their support of our athletes!

matter of opinion cufc (many decent ingerlund players did'nt get the nod)..as svens tactics in the recent wc, have shown him up for what he is..mediocre..

I couldn't represent Engalnd, but it is the system at fault as much as the palyers. It's asking a lot for them to give up their professional careers to keep the current system as is and criticism free.
Uk Athletics were given £40m recently as a Govt pay-off for losing World Championships in 2005. Even though this was a UK team event, the £40m was distributed through Sport England. Equivalent budget in Scotland is about £500k. Scottish association was told not to make waves pre-handout as they would get fair share, and were then basically shafted. I didn't see the same outrage then that Peter Nicol story got.

Yeeeees........ qualifying from the Group of Death (beating Argentina along the way) and reaching a World Cup quarter-final (losing to the eventual winners) - bearing in mind that Sven lost about 4 key members of the squad through injury and was forced to improvise with players who were barely tested at that level (Mills, Butt) - is 'mediocre'.
Right.....cheers mr shangalang. Clearly the standards you set are exceedingly high. Personally I happen to think Sven did a great job in (a) winning 5 qualifying matches on the trot to take us from bottom of our group to top, and (b) getting us further in the actual World Cup than most English (and Scottish) fans gave us a hope in hell of doing.
But I'm sure Sven is gutted that you think he is mediocre. Really.

Will, as far as I know, Nicholl had been spending his own cash on physios, coaches, travel etc to get himself/keep at No1. In England that is all paid for.
Personally, I would have stayed Scottish for less cash, but we should be asking questions of Scottish Sport as well, or we will stay underperformers.

We all know that sport in Scotland has been underfunded for far too long. It wasnt that long agao that we were in the top 20 of the world in football (and above england in the rankings!!) winning grand slams in the Rugby, and producing some excellent athletes and performers in alot of sports. But as the rest of the world has progressed sports facilities and programmes in Scotland have been left treading water.

Actually I agree to a point about Sven. He seems to have fallen into the time-honoured English tradition of sacrificing maverick talents for hard workers, picking defenders who can't use the ball and resorting to the long ball game when the going gets tough. Not all his fault of course, but I must say a lot of the early promise has ebbed. You know who I would have got in instead?
