Alan & Ian Adie also lead the "Weeest pipe band in the world group" that had the single "Scotland be good" for the 98 WC. He is on the cover of Ian Black's book "Tales of the Tartan Army".
If the Adie brothers had not claimed the name then someone else would have. They do not go to alot of matches anymore, but will turn up again when the market is there. The Tartan bus is pencilled in again for Germany next year, Bob Shields will confirm this. The Adie's may turn up again there. I have met both of them, they are just normal guys trying to make a few bucks. The SFA allow them to sell official merchandise outside Hampden, you may have seen the kiosk at recent games.
If some big company had registered the name, then there would be alot of lawsuits going down for misuse of "Tartan Army" name.

Why doesn't the SFA get it's finger out and copyright anything to do with Tartan Army/TA/The Official Tartan Army etc etc get a proper e-commerce strategy, punt it on their website and invest the profits into youth development? If you look at the English site it is better with a lot of commercial opportunities for them to make extra money.

I think some people ought to take a step back here. The last time I looked this wa s afree country and the guy could do whatever he wanted.
Called before the board? What board? Who on this board is in a position to set up a kangaroo court of another Scotland fan?
What pish are we talking here. The guy has probably been to more Scotland games than 95% of the members of this board.
He saw a business opportunity and he took it. In the words of Roy Keane "nobody has died".
Get over it.

I totally agree with JoeCraig - the guy has no "case" to answer, and certainly not to us.
However, I do agree that maybe Raury could contact the guy with a view to some agreement which could benefit the fundraising.
Raury - I think it would be a waste of hard earned cash to purchase the rights. I would imagine some compromise could be reached. The guy can't be too different to the rest of us in his views.
Anyway, I think "Tartan Army" is better than "The Tartan Army".

Like ah said before - huvnae a clue who the guy is so ah wouldnae (an' couldnae) say for or against him.
However, it looks tae me like he saw a business opportunity.............an' missed it!
He SHOULD come on this board - an' ask us what sort o' things we would buy.
If he made the right sort of merchandise an' got decent quality gear for a reasonable price then nobody would even mind him makin' his profit.
An' a pound fi each thing sold through this board tae the fund?? Just write TAMB on yer order??
OR...........
Ian Adie - sell it tae me. PLEASE!! I'll make MILLIONS!!!!!!!!
Ah ken whit yous lot are like for yer TA gear!!

Look on the Bright side. with this guy wning the rights to the name, it stops more unscrupulous people usuing the name in a bad way. Christ the Daily Record could own it and start spouting all sort s of shite in the name of the Tartan Army!

Err, Ian Adie often 'licenses' his trademark to the Record which they then use to claim they are the voice of the Tartan Army. Which is why you see that stupid bus everywhere.
One of the highlights of the World Cup was one night in Bordeaux. The record bus came past all the bars at the Place de la Victoire, which were all packed with people out on the street and it got boo-ed all the way round.
The main thing that pissed people off in the build up to France '98 was that the Record referred to him as 'the self-styled general of the Tartan Army'. I am reliably informed that this was journalistic license on behalf of the record and that Adie never claimed that title for himself.
I suppose it didn't help that he is on the from cover of Tales of the Tartan Army that came out around the same time.

joe craig fan club that is what i was trying to say that we should not jump to conclusions i was not trying to say this guy should face a board kangaroo court i was trying to say to the people who where slagging him off that the guy should have the chance to defend himself i for one would rather see a ta boy own the rights than some company that doesnt give a fu*£

Something to say |
Sounds to me the bloke is getting what he dererves..trying to cash in on a generic concept like the Tartan Army..surely everyone's property.. is fraught with danger, not to mention kind of antisocial.

i work in the patent office where you get protection against inventions (and it costs a LOT). There is also the British Patent offfice which is where you can copyright a name such as Microsoft or IBM. I'll try to investigate the cost of copyrighting Sunshine appeal. The tartan army copyright does not include anything relating to Scottish football. For more info try this link
http://www.patent.gov.uk and search for tartan army

YE WAANT TAE BUY THINGS FRAE HIM, YE WAANT TAE DEAL WAE HIM. BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF THIS, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE TWICE THAT I HAVE MET HIM. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON THE PLANE TO MOSCOW WHERE I HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO BE SITTING BEHIND HIM AND HIS CREW. THE THREE OF THEM GOT THE CARDS OUT AND STARTED TO PLAY THREE CARD BRAG, AS THE GAME WENT ON THEY INVITED A FOURTH PLAYER IN WHEN HE HAD BEEN FLEECED FOR HIS DRINK MONEY OUT HE WENT AND ANOTHER CAME IN, THIS CONTINUED FOR THE FULL FLIGHT. I AM NOT GOING TO USE THE WORD CHEATING IN CASE HE WANTS TO SUE ME, BUT I HAD A GOOD MATE IN THE PAST WHO SHOWED ME HOW TO FLEECE SOMEONE AT THREE CARD BRAG AND THEY WERE DOING JUST THAT. THE SECOND TIME I MET HIM WAS AT THE FRIENDLY IN ST. ETIENNE WHERE ANDY MCARTHUR INTRODUCED US TO EACH OTHER. I TOLD ANDY IN FRONT OF HIM THAT I ALREADY KNEW THE GUY AND EXPLAINED THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE FIRST MEETING, NOW I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANY OF YOU BUT IF SOMEBODY TOLD ME I WAS FLEECING OTHER T.A. MEMBERS I WOULD GET ANGRY AND NOT JUST REPLY "THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO PLAY" DON'T BE CAREFUL, JUST DON'T DEAL WITH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!

David of course it costs a lot in The Hague after all someone has to pay for your very expensve lifestyle
What we are in effect talking about here is not a copyright but in fact a trademark.....take it from me as I know I have done this in the past the price of getting a trademark is actually about £250.00 and with costs for a trademark advisor it can be £1000. To transfer the rights costs only about a £100 or so with a friendly lawyer on board.
I think the general jist of this thread is that it is felt that as the Tartan Army is the generic name associated with supporters of the Scottish National team it would be better if the trademark belonged not to one individual but rather to the TA as a whole. My suggestion is that the trademark would be better owned by ATAC, the Sunshine Appeal or indeed the SFA although the first 2 would be preferable to me. I and all of us on here are members of the TA and therefore I think we should have the right to use the name as and when we want.
I have stated before I dont have a problem with people making money as we all need it to survive but I do feel that part of the proceeds should go back to the "TA" in some shape or form i.e. the Sunshine Appeal which does not benefit anyone individually but indirectly benefits everyone in the TA by raising money for things that we can all be proud to be associated with.
Joecraigfanclub your point about Ian Adie being to more games than 95% of the posters on here holds no relevance with me, are you in effect saying that until you have been to say 25 games you are not allowed an opinion? My own belief and I have been to many games is that if you have the interests of the national team at heart and are a supporter by which I mean you go to games home or away then you have as much right to an opinion as someone who has been to 100 games.
