FOOTBALL: LET'S GET IT ON .. FOR REAL May 19 2002
Gordon Waddell
BERTI VOGTS last night welcomed European Cup winners Real Madrid's offer of a challenge match with Scotland and told them: Let's get it on!
The Spanish giants handed out the amazing invitation in the wake of their stunning Hampden triumph over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.
Speaking in Hong Kong last night the Scotland boss claimed he'd love to have a crack at Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Raul and co - and even suggested making it a double header!
The offer came from Real general manager Jorge Valdano by way of a thanks to the Scottish people for the night of their lives.
And Vogts said: "I'm delighted the Champions League Final went well in Glasgow and Real Madrid were so happy with our hospitality. This is the first I've heard about the offer but it sounds a great chance.
"In an ideal world I would love our U-21s to play a side like that to give them such great experience.
"But in reality the perfect time would be to play them in the week leading up to our first European Championship qualifier against the Faroe Islands.
"That's a free week and it would be a dream preparation for us. I would love to play Madrid home and away - maybe we could have the return game in the week of the second Faroes match if Real are up for it."
Meanwhile, Vogts has his eye on even more glamour and is still desperately working to land a double header in Brazil next February - but his moves could be scuppered by the English FA.
The Scotland boss is determined to keep up his strategy of taking on some of the toughest teams in the world.
And while he would expect the SPL to hold back fixtures to allow him to play more than one team on the trip to Rio, he reckons he has no chance of his Anglos being allowed to stay out.
Berti confessed: "The problem with the Brazil plan is that I wanted to play two games over there.
"The Wednesday is an international date but to play another one I would need to make an arrangement with the clubs in Scotland to keep the players out there.
"The English players would have to come home though, because they will definitely play on the Saturday and that's a problem. I'm looking for a way round it."
One possible escape route is yet another glamour match but a bit closer to home. Vogts said: "We also have an offer to play Portugal over there in February and that would be a tough game against a strong team."
Berti insists he has no fears that taking on some of the world's greats could end up demoralising his kids.
Despite a 5-0 lesson against France he said: "Players know they must learn from games like those. If we play the likes of Liechtenstein what do we learn?
"I don't believe the young players' heads go down. Even after an hour against Korea they weren't down - I felt worse than the players did."

Interesting, so Portugal is on the list now as well. A double header against Real sounds just the ticket but we definately have to play our first team.
Liechtenstein sounds good to me!
