54th now - only 2 ahead of Iceland

I'm not even gonna waste my time shouting about why fifa's ranking system is so sh*t.

Hey, 54th is doing us a favour.  I don't think we are as good as Iceland.  Watch us slip further down when we get gubbed by SA and the Honk Kong League Select, Scotland aren't a good team any more.

I know I'll get funny looks but I am a staunch defender of the rankings system as it is.

The FIFA rankings procedures aren't perfect. If they were, they wouldn't have been revised in 1999. But they have to come up with seedings somehow and I shudder to think what would happen if they went down the avenue of a media poll like college sports in America do, you'd end up with martial law most likely.

Talks too much

The problem with the rankings is that they favour big fish in small ponds, ie Mexico.

As long as they are merely used to fill spaces in Newspapers, thats fine.  The problems will start when/if FIFA uses them for seedings.

Agreed, but FIFA have done reasonably well in offsetting that.

They already do. the World Rankings accounted for about 33% of the co-efficient that decided the 5 teams that joined the hosts and holders as seeds in the World Cup (the other 67% from performances from the '90, '94 and '98 finals). (I know, I know, reading FIFA media directives...I need to get out more)
