Something to say |
Hampden i think is a great stadium, the Atmosphere can be great at times,
but unfortunately as i am only 16 i was never there to go to the old hampden terracing, though i would have loved to.
I go to all scotland home games at hampden, and i remember going to one at my local clubs park at Ibrox.
The Atmosphere at Ibrox isn't too brilliant either, the stadium is well planned, but only sometimes the atmosphere is good, the only unfortunate thing is my fellow Rangers fans all sing anti-catholic songs which i dpn't sing, as i am there to support a football team, not a cause, but half of my fellow supporters are becoming sasonachs now :s, and having to listen to Rule Brittania and God save our queen isn't what i want to hear, especially when i usually carry my saltire to ibrox with me.
I think in 5 years or so when we have a developed Scotland team we should add a tier to the North stand, i don't think there would be a problem there, that should definately lift the atmosphere.
Watching the S. Korea game today, there stadium was miles from the pitch, but the atmosphere there was stunning, if we got drummers, bagpipers etc in to hampden on qualifiers and friendlies, things would be better, I am a drummer, but i'm not in a regiment or a tartan army, which i want to join soon, so i can't go to hampden and bang a drum for 90 minutes.
but for just now, Hampden doesn't need any re-building work, i think its us fans who need rebuilding, we need to get our old spirit back, the spirit i never ever seen, but what i see in the videos my dad gives me to watch.
Cheers
Richard Duncan

Ditto to that Richie. I too am from the generation that havnae been able to experience the delights of the old Hampden and it's something I wish was possible to experience now. I also agree that the new Hampden is a great stadium and one we shoud be proud of and consider as our home. One of the main reasons the stadium is like it is, is due to the fact that the designers wanted to retain the old Hampden bowl shape, and I think that had to be done, after all the history of Hampden is richer than any stadium. And come on, we're the Tartan Army, we can create a great atmosphere at any stadium! Hopefully there will be a healthy turnout in August and we can lift the roof of Hampden.
By the way, how was Hampden funded? If the new Wembley plans go ahead it could cost 500 odd million, I hope that's not out the public purse, cos it'd be a frigging disgrace.

I managed to get a couple of tix for Bayer end, and the atmosphere was great, there were no queues for food, or toilets. Even the polis were letting you stand in the aisles and at the back.
Atmosphere in the city centre was spot on as well. Evening Times comment today said that it reminded Glasgow how football can be when everyone is there for the game without any baggage. TA in Kilts, OF tops, tartan tea towels on the away fans were all mixed together and banter was what it always should be.
We would see a different Hampden if the place was full, Scotland doing well again, and everyone going to roar them on rather than spending 90 mins worrying about when disaster's going to strike (even when we're 2 up!!)
Really makes you hope that we can get the team that can get the whole country buzzing again. Almost makes me want to get behind Euro 2008, but at the same time reinforces that Jack has cost us a great opportunity to have a month long showcase and coming together across Scotland without having to think we couldn't do it alone.
- Managed to get Scotland, the OF, and 2008 in one post, so would be grateful if the moderators could edit and distribute to different forums as necessary

Again I'm one that never experienced the old Hampden. Sounds absolutely amazing though. The fact is if there is a team on the park producing the goods then there will be a better atmosphere than if your team is losing. The atmosphere against Belgium was cracking despite there being only 37000 in the stadium. Apart from against Belgium when the hell was the last time we were given something to cheer at Hampden? (or away for that matter)

I agree that there is no point do anything else to Hampden until we have a team that is going to have people scrambling for tickets to home games. I also agree that the main priority, not just for football, is to have something along the lines of the Australian Institue of Sport to help all sports. I would sacrafice 2008 if I knew money was being put into that sort of set-up.
Oh, and a point ally made, WE CAN'T HAVE TERRACING ANYMORE!!! Fifa don't allow it!

well I'll just build my own national stadium then - you can't stop me doing that can you? hah!
with loads of terracing, no family sections, vendors who sell huge tubs of beer like baseball games, cheerleaders, closing stadium roof, proper undersoil heating that makes the grass HOT... hee hee that would great - no-on would get up from tackles because the ground would so warm and snug......
you've gone to far with that lad....

I'm not totally sure on this, but i think its comming from the government treasury, and the millenium fund.
but its the usual biasness from london again, its obvious they'll spend more on the England stadium.
cheers

Aye, the place is too small, and its capacity is way below what is was, so it follows that the atmosphere is not what is was. It's too expensive for typically noisy punters to turn up, and potential singers are spread all over the shop. You can't all gather into the middle, as used to be the case.
The shape might be wrong, but Belgium is similar and there was plenty of noise that night.
It dosn't help when the team are playing crap. When was the last time that we were creaming ourselves at a home game?
Taking the games around the country? Aberdeen was deadly quiet at the Nigeria game. Maybe there was the same problem of potential singers being split up.
The suggestion to have a standing area is excellent, but there is no way this will happen, although they manage to do it at Dortmund.
An exciting side will get us all going, but that's a bit more of a problem than putting in terraces or adding another tier to the ground! When is all going to get better, mummy?

As a slightly older (well, not 19 any more), TA member, I can understand the sentiment surrounding the old Hampden.
My dad took me to my first Scotland game against England in 1972, and there were 102.000 there. We were in the old North stand, and I can still remember it now.
However, now I'm a father of a 10 year old myself, I would never want to go back to the old days.
I took my son to his first Scotland game against Belgium last year. He loved it, still talks about it just now. I was happy because I knew he was safe in the ground, wouldn't get knocked over after a goal, and could see the whole game, even with everybody standing up.
I agree that Hampden could have been better designed. Bring the end terracings in, add 15.000 on to the capacity. But....it still has something special for me. Whether it's a Scotland game, an Aberdeen final, or the pride I had in taking my son for the first time and watching him sing along with me and everybody else.
The atmosphere that day was as good as it had been for years....we need that every game !

Let's not kid ourselves, the stadium is fine - it's the performances on the park that have caused the lack of atmosphere.

I know lots of people hark back to the old days and wish it was the same...................but tough Wembleys gone!! We have a stadium and if its good enough for the CL final then its good enough for me. Just needs to be full of the right people. A day will surely come when people are offering 10X face value for a Scotland ticket and you know what the answer will be.

I cannae mind where I read it, but was there not a proposal to have an area for pipers in Hampden. It said that the area would be in the north stand because that's where the Tartan Army is. Is this no longer the case?

Iwish people would stop blaming Glasgow for our poor crowds and atmosphere i remember an important game at tynecastle against estonia and we struggled to get 15000, watching the C.L final in a pub in town the whole pub was singing the flower and in the square after it so i think if we had a half decent team the public would come and watch
