The bid deadline isn't until mid-December. Full stop.
This could be all bo11ocks. This "Commissioner of the Office of Public Works" might just be trying to make himself look important. So he alone met a special preview team that no-one else knows about eh? Did they fly over in stealth jets to Abbotstown too? Mibbe he's just trying to impress a burd or something.
On the other hand maybe, in the words of Stephen Byers' chief senior civil servant, "we're all fuc*ed".
I'm going to keep clutching at my straws until the fat lady opens her gub. Then more than likely get the boot in once we know the truth.
I suspect we'll see a lot more stories like this and read a lot more rumours surrounding shady back room goings on with UEFA. This seems to happen with every major competition. It just looks worse because we are in the thick of it this time. Bit nerve wracking though isn't it?

Fresh ideas |
Seems to me a case of the Irish Independent (ususally sensationalist in its news) creating news rather than accurately reporting it:
They say the bid is doomed based on information they received under the "Freedom of Information Act." Big stuff! The information they received was that Ireland still has no two definite stadia. They had to use the Freedom of Information Act to get this info. The dogs in the street have been talking about this for the last year. They then make the jump that UEFA needed cast iron assurances on these two stadia when they arrived. They did not. All they needed was the Irish government to assure them that two stadia would be ready by 2008. The government gave that assurance in writing. Every other bid is in the same situation. UEFA know if they were award it to Ireland and Scotland, all the stops would be pulled out. The Fat Lady certainly has not sung yet, though it'll be a tall order.
Secret report says Euro soccer bid is doomed
THE joint Ireland-Scotland bid for the 2008 European Championships is already doomed, according to documents released to the Irish Independent under the Freedom of Information Act.
UEFA made it clear that it would need cast-iron assurances on the availability of two suitable stadiums by the time its inspectors visited Ireland. As it turned out, not even one stadium could be guaranteed.
The Commissioner of the Office of Public Works, Sean Benton - who is also the chief executive of the Campus Stadium Ireland Development company - was warned the bid would fail if the stadiums weren't ready by the middle of last month.
Mr Benton told a working group set up by the PDs and Fianna Fail after their return to government that he had "met with the UEFA preview team at Abbotstown on August 7, 2002".
"It was made clear that UEFA would need certainty on the availability of two stadia of suitable size and design by mid-September, or the bid will fall," Mr Benton said.
It thus appears that the visit of the UEFA inspectors - who toured green fields at Abbotstown and the off-limits Croke Park last month - was an empty gesture, although the inspectors suggested the Irish-Scottish bid was "alive and kicking".

Can remember discussing the point in the Heb on Tues with Tartan Sheep and ScottyP (I think!) that since the Ireland game has been brought forward to Feb, maybe the decision has already been made and we're getting to celebrate earlier???!!
Still clutching at straws, but as good a reason as any!

Everything on our side seems to be going ok - it's the Irish at fault with their failing economy and shady political dealings. I am still in hope but think we should have gone with Wales - Millenium stadium and an upgraded Ninian Park would have done. Still hoping though. Don't worry about Aberdeen - it will go through.

Alan,
There fowks on this thread saying "don't worry about the Irish, they'll come up trumps". Fowks on here hoping for Ahern to win an overall majority in the Dail etc. These things need to be water-tight but there has been a catalogue of errors, confusions, 11th hour about-turns, with hint-hint wink letters to the press from the moment McConnell sh*t on the solo bid. I'm not going down the road of blaming the Irish, even though many of them are embarrassed by all this. McConnell knew that Ahern faced all sorts of problems with this before he included them in with our bid.

I blame McConnell and will be showing my distaste at the next election (would have done anyway ).There were too many problems with the Irish side of the bid which were self-evident before we chose the joint bid.
An extra 2 stadia at Killie and Edinbro would have cost very little for the huge gains. This was well known and would have merely taken political will to implement.

I got this report from the official bid website. I still think we have a chance. There are some good pictures on the website and the visiting delegation must have been impressed by the stadiums and facilities they viewed. We need to keep this going until the end. Those that buy TAMB t-shirts should also get the bid t-shirts.
EURO 2008 BID REACTION TO TODAYS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE STADIUM IRELAND EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
22 October 2002. It was announced today in Dublin that very significant levels of interest have been shown by private investors in the proposed new Stadium Ireland development.
Twenty-three official expressions of interest have been received by the Irish government, a very ‘gratifying response’ according to the Minister on Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O’Donoghue. An expert committee will analyse each and every enquiry and will report back to the Minister. Mr O’Donoghue will in turn report back to the Cabinet by the end of November.
Simon Lyons, the Euro 2008 Bid campaign director commented:
"The pieces of the jigsaw are fitting into place. Ireland has shown comprehensive support by private industry for the National Stadium and the Scotland and Ireland Bid continues to go from strength to strength."
The proposed Stadium Ireland is one of three Irish stadia that have been named in the Scotland and Ireland Euro 2008 Bid document, the other two being Croke Park and Lansdowne Road. Ireland and Scotland have both operated this ‘three stadia strategy’ throughout the bid process and this has not altered. Ireland will provide two stadia for the Championships in 2008 should the bid be successful and Scotland will provide six.

And the GAA have again refused to make a decision on Croke Park before their AGM in April despite govt withdrawing funds for further redevelopment in the meantime. The bid has to be finalised by December. The GAA knows this full well.
All very very frustrating.
If the Irish side is definitely not going to happen is there any scope left at all for resurrecting a solo effort a la the Killie/Edinburgh comments above??
