Something to say |
Can everyone post their honest opinion of the bid coming off.
Mine is about a 25% chance we get it.

Out of three bids with best chances, I would say it's:
Sco/Eir 40%
Nordic 35%
Aus/Swi 25%

After hosting such an excellent Champions league final. It can only boost our chances of clinching our bid for 2008...............

Fresh ideas |
Chances have certainly increased. One of the potential drawbacks was Ireland's lack of national stadia, but Ireland were able to submit 3 potential grounds as part of the bid - the new national stadium, Landsdowne and Croke Park. UEFA officials have already inspected Croke Park and were very impressed and may even ask the GAA to allow European Cups to be played there. It is expected the GAA will have got rid of the soccer ban in a year or two, now that they see the potential income generated from soccer matches. The did allow the stadium to be used as part of the bid. The second thing going for the bid is the reputation and atmosphere of the Scots and Irish fans. This World Cup has shown the importance of fans - epecially home fans and the empty seats in the stadia will be a big concern and something UEFA won't want happening. 3rd, Ireland and Scotland are jointly higher ranking teams. We should have more than a 50-50 chance.

Apparently oor bid will have half a million more seats available for the whole tournament, something like 1.7m tickets compared to 1.2 from the Nordic application.
The Irish have picked up the fans of the WC award, so that can only be good news.
Nice of them to keep oor awards warm for us

Probably no better than 50/50. The Aus/Swiss bid is very good, but hopefully the Champions League Final will swing it for us

I think our bid is better, but who knows what goes on behind the scenes? Switzerland has got to have the advantage with UEFA HQ being in Geneva.

Something to say |
On the quality of bid we SHOULD get it [especially if we can confirm a 30,000 capacity stadium in the North-East]
However when you look at UEFA`s track record at awarding championships lets not raise our hopes too high.

Anyone knows how it goes with voting system? I mean Nordic obviously have 4 votes for sure in the very beginning! What about later?
I mean when there is some voting on international level then it doesn't matter who is better but it goes on friendly or business basis. Bare that in mind!
(Un)fortunately...

As far as I can see, the descision is based on 3 aspects of the bid. Commercial viability, the ability to handle large events and the passion of the supporters.
With 500000 more seats available for games than our nearest rivals, I think we win on the comercial viability front.
Our ability to handle large events is reasonably well documented. eg Champions League final, various golf chamionships and Edinburgh's 2 festivals, (summer and winter).
Passion of fans: The 2 best sets of fans in the world, both in terms of behaviour and atmosphere created.
Saying all that, the voting system which makes these descisions is prone to unpredictability.
Scotland/Ireland-50%
Vikings-20%
Austro/Swiss-30%
I cant see them giving it to a bid which would require 4 automatic qualification spaces such as the Nordic one.

Mirza,
The Nordic bid does not have 4 votes already.
The votes come from a 14 man committee, only these men count. They are coming to Scotland for a week on 9th Sept.

Aye and there is the rub..... It'll be decided by political machinations within UEFA. Are we owed favours or not? Scotland have been pretty strong supporters of the UEFA party line and have backed UEFA leadership with its wranglings with FIFA. However how many agendas are there.
However I think Its time to step up the ante and start the lobbying!

Think this is a close one to call, id guess we have about a 60% chance of getting it.
The one point going against the nordic bid is the automatic qualification of 4 countries......dont think UEFA will go for this somehow but then again they can be very strange ppl when they want tae be

cazza - the nordic group is proposing they have a play off between them to see which team qualifies automatically.
