Im no braggin but I wis at the champions league final last night and while it was a great gem and the atmos wis prettu gid, it got me thinking that it would be a rid neck tae hiv the 2008 final in this shi*y stadium, especially seeing as Berit Ahern (who looks like being realected) plans to build a bigger national stadium.

Has ther ever been a football tournament on this planet where the final will be played in a stadium which holds less than half the stadiums used in the tournament?

It was on teletext today that Gerhard Aigner apperently said that we had done our chances of hosting 2008 no harm at all, and proved that we are capable of hosting a big event.
So there!!!!

My reservations are more to do with the hopeless public transport, the chance of trouble, the lack of accommodation (we struggled for one match)and the grim reality that is industrial central Scotland.
The stadiums will be fine, and Glasgow really did Scotland proud last night.

just to illustrate one of Methilstevie's points - my wife's work had a manager from their London office up in Edinburgh for three days - Tuesday - Thursday. They were unable to book him into any city hotel because there was apparently no spare rooms due to the football........

As has been said,  that was only one game - and it has to be remembered that Bayer returned several thousand tickets which could have resulted in more tourists.....

Negativity!!!!! MethilStevie I am surprised that you have chosen to write in this negative manner as you are one of the ones who shouts loudest on this board about the SNP and the need for independence. If you think that we cannot hold 2008 in this country because we haven't got the infrastructure etc. why would anyone want to vote for the SNP do they have some kind of magic wand to hand that will suddenly cure Scotland of all of its ills?
Why can we not focus on the postive things about last night.
Like the fact that everyone seemingly had a great time and was made to feel welcome at the game and in and around Glasgow. I am sure that the beds situation will be dealt with if we are awarded 2008. For example how many fans who attended the match were on camp sites my guess would be none.
I have not read one report that states anything but positive feedback to last night's game.
This strikes me as being a case of the we are too small and we cant cope mentality. Why as Scots can we not adopt the can do will do attitude. I for one am a very proud Scot and Glaswegian today and can't believe the negativity that has been written about last night's game on here.

What negativity? I was only pointing out that stadia are the least of our worries.
And I'm sorry, but I don't shout about the SNP at all.All my political comments are responses to other peoples posts.Of course I want independence.Only an idiot wouldn't.
And I didn't say we couldn't host 2008 either. We damn well could, and no thanks to an utterly hopeless Scottish Executive.Under investment in public transport is a serious problem,so is the lack of accomodation. But we can deal with it.
I hope we do win 2008-it might persuade that tw@t McConnell to get his finger out of his backside and do the work required.
If Scotland WAS independent,I'm sure its government would realise that any capital outlay would be nothing compared to the massive cash injection to our economy, and tourism benefits for years to come.
But it isnae.
And Jack McConnel's efforts are half arsed,to say the least.

What we need to remember is that we will have 4 or 5 years to prepare for this and we have time to sort out some of the problems. As for Hampden, I don't care what anyone says about it, I still love the place and as far as I'm concerned it is a stadium for for any match. There's been far too much negativity on the Euro 2008 bid, it's a superb opportunity and we have a good chance so let's show UEFA that Scotland is ready.

The negativity has not been shown by people on this thread but by the Scot Executive. Some folk justifiably feel let down by their decision. I'm sure everyone on this board would welcome 2008 to Scotland with open arms. Given we've been let down once I think folk are sceptical and are waiting to see the detail of the bid. That's not negative, that's sense.

If the bid proves decent I'm sure folk would get behind it.

I will back a successful bid and am for it in principle.

Don't expect cheer leaders for it though - some fowks just don't see themselves as Tartan lemmings.

Despite what I've said I still love Hampden and I fully support 2008.   What Im saying is that you want a stage fitting for a final and Im not too sure without further development that Hampden is the best stadium for it.

When the original solo bid website was up, I'm sure it had pictures of the 4 existing stadiums and it said that the final would be played at Murrayfield?
That would be much better - it's a great stadium.

As much as a like Murrayfield (more so, no drive along the M8), Hampden is our home.

Again I would say Hampden needs another 15 to 20K seats.  (rebuilding of the North stand)

Christ all these threads shoot off on so many tangents - ya wonder where to begin or where to post.  Anyway to blether a wee bit on some of the debates.

Firstly this is now a joint bid - I really feel all the " if it was a solo bid" stuff is irrelevant.  As the Scottish Exec and Irish and UK governments are officially "firmly behind" it means its time to move on.  Also going on about the merits of a solo bid do little to enhance the image of a joint venture and the part the Irish have to play.

Someone said earlier (cannae mind) we have 5-6 years to prepare and that is absolutely correct.  When the decision is taken, probably before the end of this year, none of the bidders will have every single hotel room, train journey or seating plan worked out.  All that will be considered are plans and on those a decision will be made.

I, like most others believe the bidding war is really between the Austro/Swiss and us.  Both of these bids are smaller country bids, but both with good records in tourism.  What sets our bid apart is the passion of the footballing supports from both the countries and our footballing heritage.   There is nothing similar in Austria and Switzerland.

When the UEFA committee visit Scotland in September they will do so on the back of a very succesful CL Final organisation (AND that organisation is worthy of great credit - the first such game in Scotland for many years).   They will be able to see 4 stadia in the flesh (Hampden, Ibrox, Parkhead and Murrayfield) and see the plans for others (Dundee, Aberdeen and Hibs as I understand it).    They will also, I believe (but wee john probably knows more) hear the commitment and determination of real fans on the ground who represent a great many of the TA through their organisations.  They are unlikely to see that anywhere else.

There are also political factions in Austria and Switzerland that UEFA may not wish to associate with or be seen to be tacitly supporting.  I am not gonna bang on about them but there is no doubt that the Austrian govt are still finding it difficult to find a dialogue in European arenas because of their coalition involving the Freedom Party.

And lastly there is our reputation and that of the Irish.  Those reputations are both well documented and are unparalleled in European football.

If anyone thinks differently I would be glad to hear it - but on paper and reality I think this bid has a real chance and the more support it receives the lower the odds will go.  Give it a shout!

The only difficulty I see is that England hosted in '96 and goegraphically our bid may seem a little close when you consider the size of Europe these days and the fact that many Europeans still look at the UK as one nation.  However, there is no doubt that European football tournaments still have their base in NW Europe, so that would be to our advantage.

Ok VTA,
Some good points there. I think the point about the solo bid was that as it was cheaper and easier, what was the motivation of a joint bid unless it is being made to fail?

Your right about the footballing heritage in Scotland (not in Ireland) though this is nicely counterbalanced by the extremly well resourced sports facilities in the Alpines.

I don't think England's tournament will have any bearing at all, that is not an obstacle to our chances.

Your point about proximity to the authorities, the Austro-Swiss bid boast the home of Uefa. Indeed their campaign motto is "Close to you".

Currency isn't a winner cause both campaigns have 2 currencies (an advantage Jack gave away). Logistics are a problem and the public transport is far better there and no sea to cross (a disadvantage Jack built). The other problem is that none of their stadia will be in the same city which will be a big bonus for them which takes off our winning points for having high quality stadia already in place. One issue brought up at the chamions' league final was insufficient high grade accomodation and I believe Dublin suffer the same problem. Scotland and Ireland are just much poorer countries. The late change of mind, political complications, financial instability all go against us.

The fans are a great bonus for our bid. This might be an area where proximity to England may be a negative factor as hooligans can travel here easier without being screened. The divisions within the fans caused by the late change of mind will have been noted. (Good ole Jack again)

In short, we are some way behind and that was entirely avoidable. Still, there is still hope that Uefa have the will to give us the bid. We have to appeal on a human level cause we will be outscored on the bid and that is where the great relationship between the SFA and Uefa/Fifa can come in. We could have pulled the heart strings with a solo bid claiming that Scotland is the home of football but the Irish involvement buggered that up. (Guess who?)
The human elelment and building trust will take a fair bit of work and if we win the Austro-Swiss will cry foul and who in Uefa want that on their hands given all the fighting there is already?
