Fresh ideas

Guys can you imagine the feeling of standing on the Terrace of Croke Park when you Hurling team walk  out in front or 75, 000 people on All Ireland final day?
Your team, you know some of these guys, you went to school with some of them. They are ametuurs playing the best game in the world at the highest level.
This game is documented as being played over 1500 years ago, lads this is a part of  our culture, so much mnore than just a game.
The speed of the game, the skill involved, the athmosphere of the Championship, people from all walks of life standing and sitting together- Bank manager with the priest beside the builder with his wife and family and whats more the two sets of supporters mix without incident.
The craic is mighty and so is the slagging. All in a day at a Hurling match.
This what the GAA is about and what we what to preserve and if soccer is a threat to this then we want to keep it at bay.
Also in 1920 the British forces stormed a Packed Croke park and slaughered, supporters and players in cold blood, not easily forgotten!
Come to a GAA match, see whats its all about, i bet the bug will get you and you will want to see more!

As an aside to give you an idea of the level of fitness invlolved in Gaelic games, Paul Merson was once quoted as saying that the fitest guy he had even encountered on a pitch was a young lad from Ireland named Graham Geraghy- he was on a trail at Aresnal - but at home he played Gaelic Football for county meath - and lads he is by no means the fitest player in the GAA and don't forget these guys are all ameturs.

GET A LIFE!!!

Aright gael

Fitba (soccer) may be a threat to it but that's because it's the world game. Fitba appears quite popular already in Ireland.

Fitba isn't a 'British' game as the GAA call it. I think that's a pretty unrealistic view of things.

Secondly, if they don't want soccer to gain in popularity then presumably the GAA want Euro 2008 bid to fail regardless of whether it's hosted at Croke or not?

Do you know what ye should do Gael? The GAA should remove the ban on fitba being played there so it could be part of the bid. Ahern will no doubt help that process by giein ye some cash to vote accordingly.

Then when the bid inevitably loses anyway coz it's crap then yer quids in and there's still nae fitba being played there anyway.

Talks too much

Gael, I agree wi' you in that both gaelic football and hurling are fantastic exciting sports.  Been lucky enough to see both at Croke park in my time in Dublin.  I fail to see, however, how the GAA can possibly hope to stop the spread of 'soccer' as a lot of young people are beginning to follow it in a big way.  i also don't think you can really say this is a bad thing. As Jam says, footy is a world sport certainly not a Bri**** one.  I don't necessarily think that the growth in popularity of it will see the demise of GAA.  I think the GAA should be more forward-thinking and allow footy to be played there.  And please stop associating the sport as being 'Bri****'. Aw the best.

More Than Words

Gael,
many thanks for the post. It's a valuable insight, and I understand your concerns about protecting what you've got - you make it sound fantastic!
In fact the mingling fans and good craic actually sounds like the Tartan Army at an away match!!!
This is what football should be all about, and we're doing our best to spread the word...
