GET A LIFE!!!

From the BBC website.

Jumbo jets need have no fear from tiny bugs, says a microbiology firm which claims to have a solution which eradicates the airborne annoyances.
Microbes living in aviation fuel can cause havoc for planes' instruments and even eat through wings if undetected.

They can also produce misleading readings in fuel gauges and dangerous fuel leaks.

You can see holes in the wings drilled out by these microbes

Ted Hill, ECHA
Now tiny ECHA Microbiology, which employs just nine people in Cardiff, has developed an industry-standard test for the pests.

And airlines around the world have been advised by the International Air Transport Association umbrella body to use the company's new MicrobMonitor2 equipment.

It lets non-microbiologists check oils, fuels and process water for "microbial fouling, spoilage and corrosion" caused by hundreds of bacteria, yeasts and moulds.

Overnight results

Weak organic acids can corrode wings, fuel tanks and diesel fuel systems, for example.

Airlines can add a sample of the test substance to a bottle of gel. Results are obtained as soon as overnight.

MicrobMonitor2 helps planes fly longer

MicrobMonitor2 is being marketed online via Air BP and could prove vital in the continuing drive to tighten safety in the sky.

"Microbes in jet fuel are an increasing problem for airlines operating aircraft in tropical areas, said ECHA founder Ted Hill.

"I've seen aircraft where you can see holes in the wings drilled out by these microbes.

"They mess up the fuel gauges, too, so that sometimes pilots think they've got gas when they're actually almost running on empty."

Public funding

Mr Hill is a former Cardiff University microbiology lecturer, but is now preparing for rapid commercial growth. Only last week ECHA - which operates from small a unit at Cardiff Bay Business Centre - beat off intense international competition to win a major award for innovation from the Institute of Petroleum.

Now it is the latest company to have attracted Welsh Development Agency (WDA) funds as it looks to grow the business.

"Winning IATA's endorsement and the Institute of Petroleum Award is a terrific boost to the company," said WDA technology and innovation director Dr Virginia Chambers.

"It's going to ensure that a Welsh-made new technology is sold around the world. We're proud of them."

I'm nervous enough already without the likes of this.

Boat to Germany anyone???????????????

This must be another excuse tripping out of Parkhead as to why that PLANE had to land at Cardiff and nothing to do with their fans.It was MICROBES in the tanks not San Miguel in the gullet.
