I know what you mean Jam. It is an interesting debate! I don't see why it has to be seen as backward looking sport. I mean if it is marketed as representing the brave new Ireland then it wouldn't be DeValera. Of course they would have no option but to accept football as the international sport and arrange to have facilities for that too. I think it may be a bit early for them to endanger gaelic fibaw with 2008. It just might be a bit too early for them. |

this is quite an interesting debate that's going on there. A lot of Irish nationalists who think that the GAA represents a 32 county Ireland where the FAI supports a 26 county Ireland (i.e. they don't work to merge FAI and IFA).
(I think it's a bit more complex than that but anyway).
Basically it's all about the GAA being the heart of Irishness. Seems a bit DeValera to me.

You might fancy taking a look at a gaelic football site called http://www.anfearrua.ie.
They have a message board there a bit like this one. Select "Have your say" from the menu bar, then "Speak out". Go into the General forum, and there's a topic there called They Have Sold Out.
A lot of them are very much against Croke Park being used for anything other than GAA sports, despite the fact that it's completely unused between October and March. |
